Nicotinamide and Azospirillum brasilense improves the quality of Coffea arabica seedlings
(Departamento de Engenharia Agrícola - UFCG, 2023-01-06) Lima, Sebastião F.; Pinto, Pedro H. G.; Soares, Manoel P. L.; Andrade, Maria G. de O.; Simon, Cátia A.; Vendruscolo, Eduardo P.; Contardi, Lucymara M.; Cordeiro, Meire A. S.; Abreu, Mariele S.
The use of biostimulants in coffee seedlings can promote gains in their growth and quality. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the growth and quality characteristics of Coffea arabica seedlings under the effect of the nicotinamide and Azospirillum brasilense application. The experimental design was randomized blocks with treatments arranged in a 5 × 2 factorial scheme, with four replicates. The treatments resulted from the use of five doses of nicotinamide (0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 mg L-1 of water) combined with the absence and presence of Azospirillum brasilense applied to Coffea arabica seedlings from Catuaí Vermelho 144 cultivar. Plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf area, shoot dry mass, root dry mass, plant height:stem diameter ratio, shoot:root dry mass ratio, plant height:shoot dry mass ratio, and Dickson quality index were evaluated. The combined or isolated use of A. brasilense and nicotinamide, up to a dose of 33.5 mg L-1, increased the biometric characteristics and dry mass accumulation. However, using nicotinamide doses between 30 and 61.8 g L-1 increased the quality of Coffea arabica seedlings. The synergistic effect of the use of A. brasilense and nicotinamide was verified for the growth and quality of Coffea arabica seedlings.

Inoculation with mycorrhizal fungi on the growth and tolerance to water deficit of coffee plants
(Departamento de Engenharia Agrícola - UFCG, 2018) Moreira, Samuel D.; França, André C.; Rocha, Wellington W.; Tibães, Evandro S. R.; Neiva Júnior, Eudes
Water stress can be alleviated in plants inoculated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi compared to that experienced by those without mycorrhizae. The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth of coffee plants colonized by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi under different soil moisture conditions. Seeds of the coffee cultivar Catuaí Vermelho IAC 99 and three fungal inoculants (Rhizophagus clarus, Claroideoglomus etunicatum and Dentiscutata heterogama) were used in this study. The soil moisture contents tested were 40, 60, 80, and 100% of field capacity. Seedlings in the matchstick stage were inoculated with mycorrhizae, and then later planted in plastic pots when they developed four to five pairs of definitive leaves. Both the extent of mycorrhizal colonization and increases in leaf area were related to soil moisture content in a quadratic manner for plants inoculated with all three mycorhizzal fungi (R. clarus, C. etunicatum, and D. heterogama), as well as for non-inoculated ones. The highest value of colonization of coffee by mycorrhizae was 39%, which occurred in association with R. clarus at 71% of field capacity. The leaf areas of plants inoculated with fungi increased more than those of non-inoculated plants, regardless of the type of inoculum used. Plants inoculated with D. heterogama at 100% field capacity produced 21% more root dry mass than non-inoculated plants did. Inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and higher soil moisture increased the growth of coffee seedlings. The plants inoculated with R. clarus, C. etunicatum, and D. heterogama were tolerant to moderate water deficits (i.e. lower soil water contents). Mycorrhizal colonization was highest for plants in soils with moisture levels close to 75% of field capacity.

(Departamento de Engenharia Agrícola - UFCG, 2014-12) Dominghetti, Anderson W.; Scalco, Myriane S.; Guimarães, Rubens J.; Silva, Douglas R. G.; Carvalho, João P. S.; Pereira, Vinícius A.

Drip irrigation in coffee crop under different planting densities: growth and yield in southeastern Brazil
(Departamento de Engenharia Agrícola - UFCG, 2014-11) Assis, Gleice A. de; Scalco, Myriane S.; Guimarães, Rubens J.; Colombo, Alberto; Dominghetti, Anderson W.; Matos, Nagla M. S. de
Irrigation associated to reduction on planting spaces between rows and between coffee plants has been a featured practice in coffee cultivation. The objective of the present study was to assess, over a period of five consecutive years, influence of different irrigation management regimes and planting densities on growth and bean yield of Coffea arabica L.. The treatments consisted of four irrigation regimes: climatologic water balance, irrigation when the soil water tension reached values close to 20 and 60 kPa; and a control that was not irrigated. The treatments were distributed randomly in five planting densities: 2,500, 3,333, 5,000, 10,000 and 20,000 plants ha -1 . A split-plot in randomized block design was used with four replications. Irrigation promoted better growth of coffee plants and increased yield that varied in function of the plant density per area. For densities from 10,000 to 20,000 plants ha -1 , regardless of the used irrigation management, mean yield increases were over 49.6% compared to the non-irrigated crop.

The objective of the study was to use methodology of simultaneous optimization of multiple responses applied to an experimental design to determine the best combination of storage period and conditions for preservation of coffee beans. Coffea arabica L. fruits were harvested in the ripe stage of maturation, processed using wet and dry methods, and dried to 11% (wet basis) moisture content. Part of the beans was hulled, while the other part was hulled only after the beans were stored under two different environmental conditions: cooled air at 10 oC with 50% relative humidity; and at 25 oC without controlling the relative humidity. Samples were taken at 3, 6, and 12 months intervals in order to evaluate quality. The data were submitted to the simultaneous optimization of responses for each processing and hulling condition separately, in a completely randomized design and 2 x 3 factorial scheme (two storage conditions and three storage periods). In conclusion, the use of the simultaneous optimization of responses is viable to be applied for determining the ideal storage conditions in a refrigerated condition.

(Departamento de Engenharia Agrícola - UFCG, 2017-06) Carvalho, Luis C. C.; Silva, Fabio M. da; Ferraz, Gabriel A. e S.; Stracieri, Juliana; Ferraz, Patrícia F. P.; Ambrosano, Lucas
To make the coffee activity competitive, some farmers use precision coffee farming. Thus, it is possible to create thematic maps that guide management practices for regions where there are limitation for the plant development. The objective of this study was to identify the spatial dependence of coffee crop yield, in 2012 and 2013. The experimental area is located in a Haplustox in Três Pontas, Minas Gerais. One hundred sampling points were georeferenced for the collection of yield data through manual harvest. The difference of yield between crop seasons was also evaluated. Data were processed using geostatistical analysis. It was possible to identify and characterize the spatial dependence of all variables, as well as to create contour maps. There were differences between the 2012 and 2013 maps, due to the biennial coffee phenological cycle, which can be confirmed by the map of the difference between the crop seasons. It is recommended a crop management that considers the spatial variability of yield for greater economic return.
