    Associação de Pseudomonas syringae pv. garcae com algumas características agronômicas em cafeeiros F2 segregantes para o gene erecta

    A bacteriose causada pela Pseudomonas syringae pv. garcae provoca grandes prejuízos em algumas regiões da cafei- cultura brasileira, como Paraná, São Paulo e Minas Gerais, principalmente em lavouras novas, podadas e expostas ao vento. Com este trabalho, objetivou-se estudar nas plantas F 2 do cruzamento entre os genótipos IAPAR-59 e Catuaí Erecta a associação entre as características vigor vegetativo e ângulos de inserção das ramificações plagiotrópicas sobre a intensidade de ocorrência da bacteriose. Avaliaram-se, em outubro de 2001, 316 plantas F 2 plantadas no IAPAR de Londrina em outubro de 1998. A escala de notas de avaliação da incidência de bacteriose adotada foi de 1 a 5, sendo 1 = plantas sem lesão e 5 = plantas com muitas lesões. As notas de vigor vegetativo adotadas foram de 1 a 5, sendo 1 para folhas de coloração verde-claras e 5 para folhas verde- escuras. Para a inserção dos ramos plagiotrópicos sobre os ortotrópicos, as notas variaram de 1 a 3, sendo 1 = normal (45 a 70o), 2 = semi-ereta (25 a 40o) e 3 = ereta (5 a 20o). Estimou-se o coeficiente de correlação de Pearson para verificar a associação entre as características vigor vegetativo e do ângulo de inserção das ramificações plagiotrópicas com a intensidade de ocorrência da bacteriose nos cafeeiros. A correlação estimada entre a intensidade da bacteriose com o ângulo de inserção dos ramos plagiotrópicos foi de r = + 0,2087**. Não houve correlação significativa entre a bacteriose e o vigor vegetativo. Assim, plantas com ramificação plagiotrópica ereta são predispostas a uma maior incidência de bacteriose.

    Influence of coffee pruning on the severity of frost damage

    Frost damages in a field experiment of pruning types and systems for the cultivars of Coffea arabica Catuaí and Mundo Novo, were evaluated at Londrina (23 o 22’S, 52 o 10 ́W), State of Parana, southern Brazil, during the winter of 1990 and 1994. Pruning types evaluated were ‘esqueletamento’ (cutting off all plagiotropic branches at 20-30 cm from the orthotropic branch), ‘decote’ (cutting off the orthotropic branch at 1.5 m and 2.0 m above ground) and ‘recepa’ (cutting off the orthotropic branch at 0.8 m above ground), performed on all rows and on alternate rows, and on different sections of the plant. Results indicated that frost damage could increase according to the type and height of pruning. The pruning type ‘esqueletamento’ and prunings at higher levels were more suitable for regions with frost risk. Under severe frost condition, pruning type did not affect the damage in anyone of the treatments evaluated.

    High coffee population density to improve fertility of an oxisol

    The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of coffee (Coffea arabica L.) population densities on the chemical and microbiological properties of an Oxisol. The work was carried out on soil samples of 0-20 cm depth originated from an experimental site which had been used for coffee tree spacing studies during 15 years, in Paraná State, Brazil. Eight coffee tree populations were evaluated: 7143, 3571, 2381, 1786, 1429, 1190, 1020, and 893 trees/ha. Increasing plant population increased soil pH, exchangeable Ca, Mg, K, extractable P, organic carbon, moisture content and coffee root colonization by vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, and decreased exchangeable Al and microbial biomass. Such results were attributed to better erosion control, improved plant residue management and nutrient cycling, and decreased leaching losses. Increasing coffee tree population per unit of area has shown to be an important reclamation recuperation strategy for improving fertility of the acid soils in Paraná, Brazil.

    Morphophysiological characteristics of (Coffea arabica L.) in different arrangements: lessons from a 3d virtual plant approach

    3D vegetative structural and functional models are useful in simulations of ecophysiological and biophysical processes. The main objective of this study was to model a 3D Coffea arabica L. structure. The specific aim was to use 3D mock-ups for analysis of vertical leaf and berry distribution and light interception in coffee crops cultivated in different planting densities and arrangements. The mock-ups were built after abstraction and codification by VPlants, based on morphological measurements (orthotropic shoot height and its number of internodes; positions of second to fourth branching order plagiotropics; internode number on first to fourth branching order plagiotropics number of leaf pairs), and several hypotheses. Mock-ups were visualized in PlantGLViewer, while Silhouette to Total Area Ratio (STAR), leaf area (LA) and berry distribution were processed in VegeSTAR. Planting arrangements influenced STAR when the plants were grown in a low density (6,000 plants ha -1 ). Plant density had a significant effect on the number of berries in square arrangements. The higher layers were occupied by first order foliage and few berries, allowing more light to pass to the lower canopy layers. Berries were abundant in the first and second order plagiotropic branches, in the highest and middle layers. Light distribution was more uniform than leaf area distribution, indicative of a disperse foliage and efficient space occupation. STAR correlated strongly with berry number, especially in the upper, less shaded canopy layers, where flower induction was the most intense.
