Among the Brazilian states, Minas Gerais is the largest coffee producer and its regions south and west are responsible for half of the coffee produced statewide. Among the mites of economic importance for coffee crops, worthwhile highlight Oligonychus ilicis (McGregor, 1917), known as coffee red spider mite, occurring in the driest periods of the year. Associated with this mite and with an occurrence period coinciding with the highest occurrence of this arthropod, is Chrysoperla externa (Hagen, 1861), a predator naturally found in the coffee agroecosystem and that acts in regulating the population of many species of arthropods. This work was carried out to study, in laboratory conditions, the consumption capacity of immature stages of C. externa on O.ilicis. For the experiments, larvae of the first, second and third instars of C. externa were fed with eggs, nymphs and adults of the red spider mite, and evaluated over a period of 24 hours, regarding to consumption capacity and survival rate. We conclude that the second and third larval instars of C. externa, which consumed 57.6% and 67.3% of adult mites, may help to regulate the population of O. ilicis in coffee crops.
