The demand for natural products by consumers have been increasing worldwide. In Brazil this trend has also been observed and has motivated several farmers to invest in the production of organics. In the region of Cornélio Procópio, North of Parana State, Brazil, several growers have been showing interest on cultivating organic coffee, as an alternative to increase their revenues. With the objective of characterizing this situation and provide subsidies to optimize the establishment of these systems, this work presents a diagnosis of the situation and perspectives for organic coffee in this region. It was found that four growers are already certified (41 ha), one grower is in the process of certification (1.3 ha) and twenty five growers are in the process of experimentation to migrate towards organic cultivation (182 ha). The producing systems in general use the intercropping of coffee with pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) or other legume species of annual growing habits during the summer, and oats (Avena strigosa) during the winter. The complementation of fertilization of the crops is accomplished with cattle manure, natural fermented manure and organic fertilizers. The overall aspect and productivity of the crops is excellent. Pest management (leaf miner and coffee borer) has been carried with cultural practices, including shade management and careful harvest. The most important constraints detected occur in the commercialization, nutritional needs, grower education and high cost of certification.
