The efficiency of latest generation insecticides such as imidacloprid and thiamethoxan of the neonicotinoid group and the fipronil of the phenyl pirazol group, little toxic to man and environment in the control of the root fly, Chiromyza vittata Wiedmann, 1820 (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) important pest in Brazilian coffee culture. The insecticides int the formulations granulated and water-dispersible granules were applied on the soil surface under the crown of the coffee trees broadcast or sprayed in two 25 cm bands close to the stem in November of 1999 on a adult coffee crop aged 20 years 4.0 x 1.0 m spacing with 2,500 plants/ha in the town of Ijaci, South of Minas Gerais. The evaluation of the efficiency of inseticides was done through the parameters: percentage of living and dead larvae and percentage of efficiency, obtained in a single evaluation through the entrenching and count of living and dead larvae at 120 days after its application. Of the applied insecticides, imidacploprid 700 GRDA at the dosagens of 0.34 and 0.4 g/ hole equivalents the 850 and 1,000 g/ha presented 77.97 and 80.82% of larva mortality and 77.7 and 87.5% of efficiency, respectively. The other insecticides thiamethoxan 250 WG, thiamethoxan 10 GR, fipronil 20 GR and fipronil 800 WG, at the dosages tested presented from 29.88 to 41.53% and 28.9 to 40.7%, respectively percentages of dead larvae and efficiency.
