This study aims to evaluate the physiological effects of grevillea trees on coffee plantations. It was carried out on a property located in the village of Capinal (within the municipality of Vitória da Conquista), Bahia, Brazil. It comprised coffee trees (Coffea arabica L. cv Catuaí Amarelo) and grevillea trees (Grevillea robusta L.). Delineation in randomized blocks were used and four diferent treatments were applied (defined by the distances between the zero-meter, four-meter, eight-meter and twelve-meter coffee plants and grevillea trees (Grevillea robusta L.), with six repetitions. The characteristics analysed were: specific leaf area, relative ratio of water, proline and the humidity of the soil. Samples were taken every two months from 1999 to 2002. In order to analyse proline, the relative ratio of water, and the specifiv leaf area, leaves were collected from the middle part of the coffee plants in each portion. Concerning the analyses of the percentage of humidity in the soil, samples were collected in the following depths: 0- 10, 10-20, and 20-30 cm, under the projection of the canopy and the space between the coffee plants. The data were checked according to the linear regression and variance analysis. During the periods analysed meaninful linear reductions were observed in the specific leaf area, as a function of the distances between the coffee plants and the grevillea trees. As for the water relative content, the model adjustment for years 1999- 2000 and 2001-2002, it was not possible. Considering the three periods which were examined, the ratio of proline increased and the humidity of the soil, at all depths decreased due to the distances from the the row of grevillea trees.
