Coffee has recently been nominated a functional food. It is not known if coffee consumption is associated with specific food consumption patters in workers. In this context, the aim of the present study was to identify associations of coffee consumption levels with food intake patterns and selected social-behavior factors of workers from the metropolitan region of Belém-PA, Brazil. This is a cross-sectional population-based study which examined a sample of 1.054 workers. The majority of individual were males (69%). Coffee consumption and intake of food groups were assessed by a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Cochran-Armitage tendency test was used to verify the proportion of coffee intake according to frequency of food groups intake. Proportions were used to characterize socio-behavioral aspects according to coffee consumption. Majority of the participants were coffee consumers (93,4%). There was association of coffee intake with age and smoking. With regards to the food groups, it was found that coffee drinkers have a significant higher proportion of intake of meats and eggs (p 0.04), oils and fats (p 0.003), and snacks (p 0.02). In the workers from Belém coffee intake presented positive tendency with less health food groups. It is of interest to follow food intake profile in the population after the dissemination of results about coffee and health showing the benefits of regular coffee drinking.
