The biology of rust (Hemileia vastatrix) is well studied in arabica coffee (Coffea arabica), however little is known on this subject for conilon coffee (C. canephora). The aim of this study was to determine the best temperature and leaf wetness for germination and infection of rust leaf in conilon coffee . The influence of the leaf age on the infection was also determined in the study. Isolates from three cities of the State of Espirito Santo were collected, obtained in the form of isolated pustule and biologically characterized. It was detected two isolates of race II and one of race I of H. vastatrix. The following temperatures and hours of leaf wetness were evaluated in the experiments: temperatures of 18°C, 21°C, 24°C, 27°C and 30°C and leaf wetness of 4, 8, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours. Germination and infectivity during incubation were determined. Germination was evaluated in Petri dishes containing agar-water and infectivity was assessed by determining the diseased leaf area from leaf discs of conilon coffee inside plastic boxes (11x11x3cm). The results showed high germination rate and infectivity in leaf wetness exceeding 24 hours and temperatures between 21 and 24°C during incubation. The three ages of leaf (young, adult and old) used in the study had the same disease area when inoculated with race II of H. vastatrix.
