In the last years, a great number of producers of coffee have been adopting, reduced spacing that facilitate the cultivation of larger populations may come up to 20. 000 plants for hectare. And as we have a great number of cultivars in the market, the present work had as objective to know the best kind of conduction of stems in reduced spacing, for cultivating Catucaí. The experiment was accomplished in the experimental campus of the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA), and the crop pruned in October/2002 after 4 years of production in a height of 40 cm from the soil without lung and driven up to december/2003. The utilized experimental design was the randomized blocks with treatments of conduction of one and two stems, subdivided in 3 evaluations distributed in the time with 4 repetitions. The portions consisted of 4 lines with 4 plants each, with a spacing of 2m among lines x 1m among plants, being considered the central plants for evaluation. The variables evaluated in this experiment were diameter of stems (mm) and height of stems (cm), analyzed with the program SISVAR 4. 3. In agreement with the data significant difference was not verified between the two types of conduction of stems for height, even so in the variable stem diameter it was observed that the plants driven by one stem developed more than the plants with two stems. In the evaluation times there was significant difference in the accumulation of growth of the plants, in both conductions and in both variables.
