In the last years, a great number of coffee producers have been adopting, reduced spacing technique that facilitate the cultivation of larger populations that may produce up to 20. 000 plants for hectare. And as we have a great number of cultivars in the market, the present work had as objective to find out the best type of conduction of stems in reduced space plantations for Catuaí cultivars. The experiment was accomplished in the experimental campus of the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA), and the plantation pruned in October/2002 after 4 years of production to a height of 40 cm of the soil without lung and driven up to dezembro/2003. The experimental design utilized was blocks in random with conduction treatments of one and two stems, subdivided in 3 evaluations distributed in the time with 4 repetitions. The plots consisted of 4 lines with 4 plants each, with a spacing of 2m among lines x 1m between plants, being considered the central plants for evaluation. The variables analyzed in this experiment were the stems diameter (mm) and stem height (cm), analyzed with the program SISVAR 4. 3. In agreement with the data, it has not been verified significant difference was for diameter between the two types of stems conduction in any of the evaluation period, although, concerning the variable stem height a significant difference has not been observed until the last evaluation when the plants driven by two stems were superior the plants driven by one stem. Significant difference was not also verified in the medium height of the stems between the first two times.
