Based in the used of pruning in the coffee tree, this study aimed to evaluate the root system from these practices. The root growth analysis in three soil depth showed that before pruning, the root system length, independent of fruit presence, did not show difference among them. Three months after pruning showed an increase in root system growth in relation to previous period and this augment was higher in pruned plants than in control. At six months after pruning, the root length of pruned plants also were higher than non pruning plants, although in low proportion. Finally, at twelve months after pruning, the length was essentially the same between pruned and non pruned plants. In addition to these observations, there were also observed that fruit removal before pruning, did not influence the root behavior, and in all evaluations, except the last, it was noted a higher root accumulation in the 20cm of soil. In relation to horizontal distribution the plant root volum, in all treatments evaluated were observed a reduction in radical volum in the range from 20 to 40 cm, except in plants pruned in March/2008. The pruning reduced the plant root volum while the presence or absence of fruit before harvest did not affect the horizontal distribution of root system.
