The reproductive behavior of the coffee leaf miner, Leucoptera coffeella (Guérin-Mèneville) was studied. Male activity was studied in a 0.7 ha coffee plantation, cv. Catuaí, where Delta traps were installed at 0.5 m above ground, using either virgin females or ruber septa impregnated wih the synthetic sexual pheromone as a lure. Caught insects were recorded each hour during the daytime. In laboratory, we observed the periodicity of mating with virgin couples of different ages. Mating behavior (calling, courtship and copulation) were recorded, using virgin couples aged one day. Fecundity, egg fertility and female remating were evaluated as a function of different ages of both male and female, at the first mating. Males previously mated, were put togheter with virgin females to verify the effect of the number of previous mating of the male in the fecundity, egg fertility and female remating. Host selection for oviposition were also observed, in cages containing leaves with and without eggs, and mined leaves with and without the caterpillar. The highest male capture occurred at 12:00 p.m. (traps with virgin females) or 1:00 p.m., (traps with the synthetic pheromone lures). The mating periodicity varied among ages, and mating behavior was not different from what is known for other Lepidoptera. Male delay in mating affected the fecundity and fertility, while the ages females mated affected only the fecundity. The age of males did not influence the female remating, but old females showed high frequency of remating. Females that mated with males which had already mated three times, had the smallest fecundity and egg fertility, but the highest frequency of remating. Females of L. coffella showed preference to lay eggs on leaves without eggs in a choice bioassay containing also leaves with eggs, mined leaves with and without caterpillars.
