The slow coffee germination makes it difficult to rapid assessment of the germination and the seed vigor, due to the excessive time required obtaining the results of the tests currently used. The objective of this study was to investigate alternative methods to evaluate and certify the physiological quality of coffee seeds. Two studies were made to evaluate the potential of coffee beans to produce normal plants. According to recent research findings, it is possible to evaluate all parts of coffee seedlings in early stages of its development. In the first study tested the efficiency of these stages in order to demonstrate the germination of seeds of ten lots, investigating, thus the possibility of reducing the time pattern of germination of coffee seeds. In the second study aimed to verify the efficiency of computerized image analysis for seedling vigor evaluation of coffee seeds. Results of research have shown that it is possible to use computerized systems, such as the Seed Vigor Image System (SVIS ®), to evaluate the physiological quality of seeds. Therefore, results of the ten seed lots of coffee, made by means of several tests, compared to the results of computerized image analysis of these plants originated from seeds. The results of the first study shows that the evaluation of coffee seedlings 18 days, in stage S1 (assessment criterion in which seedlings are earlier), provides the same result of the pattern, allowing a significant reduction of time in order to demonstrate germination of a batch of seeds, the seedling evaluation coffee in Step S2 (the assessment criterion in which seedlings are later) does not allow significant reduction of time for evaluating the germination of coffee, in relation to the pattern ; The second study, we conclude that, although more conclusive studies about the use of computerized images are needed, the image processing in SVIS® to evaluate the physiological quality of coffee seeds is a promising tool.
