The coffee leaf rust is the main disease of the coffee plantation and can cause significant losses in the yield. The occurrence of this disease is influenced by weather conditions, such as continuous rain and mild temperatures, and also by crop load and tree density. In this work, we studied the coffee leaf rust infection in coffee fields located at the Experimental Station of Varginha, from 1998/99 to 2003/2004. Leaf rust infection was evaluated in close-spaced and in conventional tree density fields that had not received leaf rust control. In both cases, leaf samples were collected from fields with high and low crop load. It was observed that no matter the coffee density, high crop load was the main factor to increase leaf rust infection during the period of study. The annual cycle of the leaf rust was also quite influenced by weather conditions, particularly by temperature and precipitation, during the months of November/December to April /May.
