The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of some insecticides and acaricides on the diversity of mites on coffee plantation close to natural tropical forest, as well as the influence of the forest on the spatial and temporal distribution of the populations of predaceous and phytophagous mites. The study was conducted at São José Farm, Monte Alegre do Sul County, State of São Paulo. The plantation was of ‘Mundo Novo’ cultivar with 30 years old. The following chemical treatments were used: thiamethoxam (Actara G) at 50 kg of commercial product/ha; cypermethrin + prophenophos (Polythrin 400/40 EC) at 150 ml of commercial product/100 liters of water; abamectin (Vertimec 18 EC) at 30 ml of commercial product/100 liters of water. During each evaluation, 30 leaves were collected from the mid third and inferior parts of six plants (external part of canopy) per plot. Each plot was constituted by two adjacent rows with five plants per row. The experimental design was the completely casualized blocks. The blocks were distributed at 5, 10, 20, and 40 meters from the border of the forest. The predaceous mites of the families Phytoseiidae, Stigmaeidae and Cunaxidae, and the phytophagous mites B. phoenicis and Oligonychus sp. were the most abundant during the studied period. The distribution of mites varied in function of the distance from the border of the forest.
