This research aimed to estimate the leafhoppers population in three coffee culture systems: organic, transition and conventional, located contiguous to pasture system. Trials were performed in the Cachoeirinha Farm, in the County of Santo Antônio do Amparo - MG. The experimental design corresponded to Split Plot, with three treatments (culture systems), two sub-treatments (border and interior), and four replicates. Eight yellow adhesive traps (10,0 x 25,0 cm, double face) were placed in each treatment. They were kept in the field from June 8 th to 19 th , 2001. Insects were collected, screened and mounted in the Biological Control Laboratory of EPAMIG/CTSM - EcoCentro/Lavras-MG. Leafhoppers were identified at the level of family, genus or species. A total of 652 specimens of leafhoppers, were collected in the three culture systems belonging to 26 species. Macugonalia sp was the most predominant species with a capture of 215 specimens, Dilobopterus costalimai with 105 specimens and Oncometopia facialis with 61 specimens. Comparing the three systems, the highest number of leafhoppers in the interior of the plot was found in the conventional plot, meanwhile no difference was found when comparing the borders. When comparing border and interior of plots, a highest number of leafhoppers was observed in the borders of the plot in the organic treatment, no difference occurred in the transition system, and more abundant in the interior in the conventional system. In the interior of the plot the lowest species diversity was found in the organic plot (4.5 species), without differences between transition (7.0 species) and conventional plots (8.5 species). No difference was found in the border of the plots referring to the species diversity.
