Item Simple procedure for nutrient analysis of coffee plant with energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF)(Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz", 2013-07) Tezotto, Tiago; Favarin, José Laércio; Paula Neto, Ana; Gratão, Priscila Lupino; Azevedo, Ricardo Antunes; Mazzafera, PauloNutrient analysis is used to estimate nutrient content of crop plants to manage fertilizer application for sustained crop production. Direct solid analysis of agricultural and envi- ronmental samples by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF) was chosen as alternative technique to evaluate the simultaneous multielemental quantification of the most important essential elements in coffee (Coffea arabica L.) plants. Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry and certified reference materials made from leaves were used to calibrate and check the trueness of EDXRF method for the determination of the concentration of several nutrients in coffee leaves and branches. Fluorescence spectrometry proved to be ad- vantageous and presented low cost as loose powder samples could be used. Samples collected from a field experiment where coffee plants were treated with excess of Ni and Zn were used to verify the practical application of the method. Good relationships were achieved between certi- fied values and data obtained by EDXRF, with recoveries ranging from 82 to 117 %.Item Growth rate and nutritional status of an organic coffee cropping system(Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz", 2005-03) Ricci, Marta dos Santos Freire; Alves, Bruno José Rodrigues; Miranda, Simone Cordeiro de; Oliveira, Fabio Freire deIn view of the low N concentration in organic fertilizers, it is necessary to use high rates of such fertilizers to attend coffee crop requirements. Hence, N is the most limiting nutrient for organic coffee production. The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea) organic fertilization on the growth and nutritional status of coffee cultivars, as well as to quantify plant biomass and N input derived from biological nitrogen fixation, and their effect on soil chemical characteristics. The experiment consisted of six coffee (Coffea arabica) cultivars intercropped with and without sunn hemp sown in November 2001 and pruned at mid-height 76 days later. At 175 days, the standing biomass of the legume was cut, measuring dry mass, total N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and 15 N natural abundance, resulting 16 t ha -1 of dry mass and the recycling of 444, 21, 241, 191, and 44 kg ha -1 of N, P, K, Ca, and Mg, respectively. Cultivars ‘Obatã’ and ‘Catuaí Vermelho’ presented the highest growth rates in terms of plant height, while cultivars ‘Icatu’ and ‘Oeiras’ presented the lowest rates. Biological nitrogen fixation associated to the legume introduced more than 200 kg ha -1 of N, which is a demonstration that N fertilization in organic cropping systems is a valuable alternative. Intercropping lead to a constant coffee leaf N content during the entire cropping cycle, contrary to what was observed in plots grown without sunn hemp.Item Stomatal behavior and components of the antioxidative system in coffee plants under water stress(Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz", 2011-01) Deuner, Sidnei; Alves, José Donizeti; Zanandrea, Ilisandra; Goulart, Patrícia de Fátima Pereira; Silveira, Neidiquele Maria; Henrique, Paôla de Castro; Mesquita, Alessandro CarlosCoffee (Coffea arabica) plants show a positive relationship between stomatal closure and formation and accumulation of H2O2. However, for coffee plants under water restriction such relationship has never been studied. The objective of the present study was evaluate the stomatal movement and the antioxidant capacity of coffee seedlings under different water regimes. Eight months old coffee seedlings of cv. Catuaí IAC 99 were submitted to field capacity, gradual and total suspension of irrigation during a period of 21 days. Evaluations of leaf water potential (Ψ w) were performed in the beginning of the morning, and stomatal resistance, transpiration rate and vapor pressure deficit were determined at 10 am and 5 pm. All biochemical and enzymatic determinations were performed in leaves collected at 5 pm. Evaluations and samplings were performed at three days intervals. There was no variation in Ψ w during the evaluated period for plants in field capacity. However, an expressive decrease of Ψ w following day 12, reaching values near -2.5 MPa at the end of the experiment was observed for plants submitted to gradual suspension of irrigation. For plants submitted to total suspension of irrigation, Ψ w decreases after the sixth day, reaching -2.5 MPa at day 15. The decay of Ψ w in plants submitted to gradual and total suspension of irrigation reflected in increased stomatal resistance and in a decreased transpiration rate leading to an increase in hydrogen peroxide formation and, on final stages, increase in lipid peroxidation. As a conclusion, an increase in the activity of antioxidant enzymes as well as in the levels of ascorbate and dehydroascorbate was observed, which act in the detoxification of free radicals formed as result of the water stress.Item Production and vegetative growth of coffee trees under fertilization and shade levels(Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz", 2010-11) Jaramillo-Botero, Catalina; Santos, Ricardo Henrique Silva; Martinez, Herminia Emilia Prieto; Cecon, Paulo Roberto; Fardin, Merci PereiraIt is difficult to separate the effects of light reduction versus nutrient and water competition in agroforestry systems. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of shading and fertilizer supply on the vegetative development and yield of Coffea arabica over six years. The coffee trees were covered with shade screens (photosynthetically active radiation reduction up to 48%) and fertilized from 100 to 40% of the recommended amount from 2001 on. Leaf area, number of leaves, number of nodes, leaf area per branch and, yield were determined. Although no effect of fertilization was found, shading influenced the number of nodes, leaf area and production from the third year on. The number of nodes and yield decreased as shading increased. The effect of the yield bienniallity was more evident in the unshaded trees, which yielded an average of 2,646 kg ha –1 . The trees under 48% shading yielded an average of 2,094 kg ha –1 . After 2004 the leaf area per branch increased as the shade increased, at the end of both the maximum and minimum growth periods. During the first three years, the coffee trees do not change their vegetative or productive characteristics as a response to shading. The shade effects become more intense after the beginning of the higher yield period. The shaded coffee trees have a larger leaf area and a smaller number of nodes than the coffee trees under full sun. The yield decreases as photosynthetically active radiation limitation increases, and yield bienniallity is less intense in shaded trees.Item Natural infection of several coffea species and hybrids and Psilanthus ebracteolatus by the coffee ringspot virus (CoRSV)(Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz", 2011-07) Kitajima, Elliot Watanabe; Chagas, César Martins; Braghini, Masako Toma; Fazuoli, Luiz Carlos; Fabris, Eliane Cristina Locali-; Salaroli, Renato BarbosaCoffee ringspot is a minor coffee disease caused by the nuclear type of Brevipalpus mite-transmitted virus, Coffee ringspot virus (CoRSV). Recently outbreaks of the disease in some growing regions of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, were registered with qualitative and quantitative yield losses. Coffea arabica was the only species registered as natural host. A survey was made on a germplasm collection of Coffea and related species kept at the Centro de Café “Alcides Carvalho”, Instituto Agronômico, Campinas, state of São Paulo (SP), Brazil, to assess natural susceptibility of Coffee species, other than C. arabica and some interspecific hybrids of Coffea as well as other non-Coffea plant species to the Coffee ringspot virus (CoRSV). The following plants were found with ringspot symptoms on their leaves and/or fruits besides C. arabica L.: C. kapakata (IAC 4511), C. dewevrei cv. Excelsa, C. canephora cv. Robusta, hybrid derivative of the C. arabica × C. racemosa (IAC1195-5-6-2), C. arabica × C. dewerei (Piatã IAC 387), Híbrido de Timor CIFC 832/1 (derivative from a natural crossing between C. arabica × C. canephora) and C. racemosa. Also Psilanthus ebracteolatus, a species close to the genus Coffee was also found with ringspot lesions on their leaves. All these plants were also found infested by Brevipalpus mites identified as B. phoenicis. Infection of these plants by CoRSV was confirmed by the observation of characteristic cytopathic effects in the tissues of the lesion and by RT-PCR using a pair of primer specific for CoRSV. Only with C. racemosa RT-PCR failed to amplify the CoRSV genome. The susceptibility of P. ebracteolatus to CoRSV adds new dimension regarding its controversial taxonomic position.
