Item Prediction of genetic gains from selection in Arabica coffee progenies(Crop Breeding and Applied Biotechnology, 2011-09-08) Oliveira, Antonio Carlos Baião de; Pereira, Antonio Alves; Silva, Felipe Lopes da; Rezende, Juliana Costa de; Botelho, César Elias; Carvalho, Gladyston RodriguesGains from selection for yield were estimated in Arabica coffee progenies carrying rust-resistance genes. The experiment in augmented block design was installed in Três Pontas, state of Minas Gerais. Three blocks were established with six plants per plot, spaced 3.50 x 0.90 m, in 96 regular (F2 progenies) and two control treatments. The plant response to rust was evaluated on a grade scale in 2008. Yield (bags per hectare) was estimated in the growing seasons 2005 to 2008. Significant differences between treatments for yield were observed in all harvests, except 2005. The presence of genetic variability among progenies allowed significant gain from selection for yield. Under the experimental conditions of this study, selection for yield can be performed in the first high-yield year, without major losses compared to genetic gain from selection for yield when based on the mean of four harvests.Item Agronomic performance and productivity of Arabica coffee intercropped with timber species(Universidade Federal de Viçosa, 2023-04-14) Freitas, Ana Flávia de; Fonseca, Arley José; Volpato, Margarete Marin Lordelo; Carvalho, Gladyston Rodrigues; Venturin, Regis Pereira; Silva, Vânia AparecidaThe insertion of the tree component in coffee production is a strategy from an economic and environmental perspective. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the temporal influence on the agronomic and productive performance of the coffee crop under the interference of different tree species as a function of spacing. The experiment was set in the municipality of Santo Antônio de Amparo-MG, in 2012, and conducted in a randomized block design with four replications. The treatments were: cultivar ‘Catuai Vermelho IAC 99’ in monoculture (3.40 m x 0.65 m) and intercropped with African mahogany, teak and pink cedar, in two spacings (9 x 13.6 m and 18 x 13.6 m), in coffee rows. Three coffee rows were fixed between rows, totaling 13.6 m. The following variables were evaluated: height (m), stem diameter (cm), crown diameter (m), productivity (bags ha-1) and yield (l/sc) for coffee. From the evaluations, there is a significant effect of height, productivity and yield for the coffee crop. The system intercropped with tree species did not influence coffee productivity and yield until the 3rd harvest and, for the 5th harvest, intercropping with mahogany favored productivity, although the accumulated productivity did not show any treatment effect.Item Agronomic performance of Arabica coffee cultivars in the subtropical humid environment of Vale do Ribeira Paulista, Brazil(Universidade Federal de Viçosa, 2022-01-09) Carvalho, Alex Mendonça de; Teramoto, Érico Tadao; Botelho, Cesar Elias; Carvalho, Gladyston Rodrigues; Lima, Amador Eduardo de; Guerreiro Filho, OliveiroThis research is related to the evaluation of vegetative growth parameters, initial yield and incidence of pests and diseases of twelve Arabica coffee cultivars submitted to the subtropical humidity environment of Vale do Ribeira Paulista, Brazil. The experiment was performed in the Experimental Campus of the UNESP in Registro, in a randomized block design, with three replications. Stem diameter, number of plagiotropic branches, plant height, number of internodes of plagiotropic branches, length of the first plagiotropic branch, incidence of brown eye spot and phoma leaf spot on coffee leaves, infestation by leaf miner and the yield of cultivars were evaluated. The results obtained allowed to conclude that: i) cultivars Catuaí Amarelo IAC 62, Catuaí Vermelho IAC 99 and Mundo Novo IAC 379-1 were higher than the others, with yield above the national average in 2020 and percentage of flat beans below 10%; ii) all cultivars evaluated showed a similar level of increment of variables that indicate plant growth and reproductive development; iii) the cultivation environment is favorable to infestation by the leaf miner and unfavorable to the incidence of rust; iv) The prevailing climatic conditions in the Vale do Ribeira Paulista is suitable for the production of Arabica coffee.Item Morphological, physiological, and agronomic traits of crossings of 'Icatu' x 'Catimor' coffee tree subjected to water deficit(Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária - Embrapa, 2022-07-27) Coelho, Larissa Sousa; Tassone, Guilherme Augusto Teixeira; Carvalho, Gladyston Rodrigues; Silva, Vânia Aparecida; Viana, Mariana Thereza Rodrigues; Pereira, Fernanda Aparecida Castro; Nadaleti, Denis Henrique Silva; Silveira, Helbert Rezende de Oliveira; Botelho, Cesar EliasThe objective of this work was to select genotypes of Coffea arabica with good yield and potential tolerance to water deficit, as well as to try to understand the physiological and anatomical mechanisms involved in the adaptability of these genotypes to water stress. The physiological, anatomical, and agronomic traits of 19 genotypes of C. arabica were evaluated under the two following water conditions: regular irrigation and no irrigation (soil water deficit). The 'IPR 100', 2, 5, and 7 genotypes showed agronomic, physiological, and anatomical traits that contributed to a better water status maintenance in the initial development of coffee plants. Based on these results, these genotypes are potentially tolerant to water deficit. The 4, 10, 11, 14, 15, and 'Bourbon Amarelo IAC J10' genotypes show a lower adaptability of the anatomical structures under soil-water deficit conditions. The coffee tree genotypes display leaf plasticity, such as the thickness of palisade and spongy parenchyma, and the number, position, dimensions, and mobility of stomata under water deficit conditions.Item Productivity and beverage sensory quality of arabica coffee intercropped with timber species(Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária - Embrapa, 2020) Freitas, Ana Flávia de; Nadaleti, Denis Henrique Silva; Silveira, Helbert Rezende de Oliveira; Carvalho, Gladyston Rodrigues; Venturin, Regis Pereira; Silva, Vânia AparecidaThe objective of this work was to evaluate the productivity and beverage sensory quality of arabica coffee under the influence of tree species cultivated at different spacings. The experiment was set in 2012, in the municipality of Santo Antônio do Amparo, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. A randomized complete block design was carried out with four replicates and seven treatments, as follows: Catuaí Vermelho IAC 99 Coffea arábica in monoculture (3.40x0.65 m); and this cultivar intercropped at two spacings (9.0x13.6 and 18.0x13.6 m) in the coffee row ‒ either with African mahogany (Khaya ivorensis), teak (Tectona grandis), or pink cedar (Acrocarpus fraxinifolius). Three coffee rows were fixed between rows, totaling 13.6 m between the wooded rows. Productivity, sensory analysis (cup test), and content analysis of sensory attributes were evaluated in the 2017 and 2018 crop years. The treatments and years of harvest influenced productivity. The sensory analysis was positive for coffee intercropped with African mahogany and teak, in 2018. Sensory attributes and nuances are modified by the Years of harvest. Arabica coffee plants intercropped with African mahogany show a superior productivity, regardless of the spacing between species, as well as a higher sensory quality in the 2018 harvest.Item Genetic determination of characteristics related to semi-mechanized coffee harvests(Crop Breeding and Applied Biotechnology, 2020) Dias, Rodrigo Elias Batista Almeida; Dias, Rafael Antônio Almeida; Botelho, César Elias; Abrahão, Juliana Costa de Rezende; Rezende, Tiago Teruel; Carvalho, Gladyston RodriguesBrazilian coffee cultivation was boosted over the last few decades by the mechanization of various field operations. Considering the influence of genetic factors on coffee harvesting efficiency, we aimed to evaluate the use of mechanized harvesting characteristics as a criterion to select progenies derived from ‘Icatu’ germplasm, previously evaluated for agronomic characteristics, resistance to rust and cercosporiosis. We also investigated genotypic and phenotypic correlations between semi-mechanized harvesting characteristics. Ten progenies of Coffea arabica L. were analyzed in two experimental farms during two consecutive harvests. Genetic parameters were evaluated to trace selection strategies. Four progenies that were suitable for mechanization were selected, supporting our hypothesis of the use of harvest characteristics as selection criteria.Item Phytotoxicity and leaf anatomy of young coffee plants subjected to herbicides exclusively and in associations(Editora UFLA, 2020) Rodrigues, Rafael Jorge Almeida; Gonçalves, Adenilson Henrique; Menicucci Netto, Pedro; Carneiro, Arthur Henrique Cruvinel; Castanheira, Dalyse Toledo; Guimarães, Rubens José; Carvalho, Gladyston RodriguesThe lack of work force and the damage that weeds can cause to coffee plants are the causes of the growing demand for selective herbicides to be used in coffee farming. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the phytotoxicity symptoms and leaf anatomical characteristics of young coffee plants submitted to application isolated herbicides and also in associations. An experiment was carried out in a protected environment in randomized blocks: four replicates with coffee seedlings (Coffea arabica L.) cultivar “Topázio MG-1190”, grown in pots with a capacity of 11 liters of substrate. The herbicides applied, in isolation, were: pyrazosulfuron-ethyl (0.015 kg ha-1), saflufenacil (0.049 kg ha-1), imazetaphyr (0.1 kg ha-1), iodosulfuron-methyl (0.0035 kg ha-1), chlorimuron-ethyl (0.015 kg ha-1) and sethoxydim (0.184 kg ha-1). The latter was used in associations with the others. In addition, a control without herbicides was used. Phytotoxicity symptoms were evaluated up to 49 days after application (DAA) and anatomical characteristics at 65 DAA. Saflufenacil exclusively and inassociation with sethoxydim caused visual phytotoxicity symptoms in the leaves and negatively influence in the characteristics of the epidermis thickness of the adaxial face (EAD), thickness of the palisade parenchyma (PAP), thickness of the spongy parenchyma (SPP) and thickness of the mesophyll (MES). The other herbicides, isolated or in associations, didn’t cause phytotoxicity symptoms, but had negative influence in the anatomical parameters of the leaf blade. However they did not interfere with the paradermic parameters and the vascular bundle.Item Nutritional efficiency in phosphorus of arabica coffee genotypes(Editora UFLA, 2021) Vilela, Diego Júnior Martins; Coelho, Larissa Sousa; Silva, Douglas Ramos Guelfi; Carvalho, Gladyston Rodrigues; Botelho, Cesar Elias; Ferreira, André DominghettiNutritional efficiency is a term used to characterize plants in their capacity to uptake and use nutrients, being related to the efficiency of uptake, translocation, and utilization of nutrients. Different coffee genotypes are expected to exhibit variability in their nutritional efficiency. This work aimed to evaluate the phosphorus nutritional efficiency in arabica coffee genotypes. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse of the Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária de Minas Gerais (EPAMIG), located in the municipality of Lavras – Minas Gerais, Brazil. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design, in a 10x2 factorial scheme (10 arabica coffee genotypes and two dosages of phosphate fertilization), with four replicates. Each experimental plot consisted of one pot with ten liters of soil, with one plant. The cultivars Catiguá MG2, MGS Ametista and Sarchimor MG 8840 are neither efficient nor responsive to phosphate fertilization. Progeny H 6-47-10 pl. 3 and the cultivar Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144 are not efficient but are responsive to phosphate fertilization. The cultivars Paraíso MG H 419-1, Topázio MG 1190 and MGS Paraíso 2 are efficient but are not responsive to phosphate fertilization. The cultivars Bourbon Amarelo IAC J10 and MGS Aranãs are efficient and responsive to phosphate fertilization. As cultivares utilizadas como testemunha que apresentaram as maiores produtividades foram Topázio MG-1189 e 1189 SL, Rubi MG-1192 e 1192SL, Catuaí Vermelho IAC 15 e IAC 144 e Mundo Novo IAC-376-4 e 376-4SL.Item MG Travessia: a coffee arabica cultivar productive and responsive to pruning(Crop Breeding and Applied Biotechnology, 2017-07) Carvalho, Gladyston Rodrigues; Bartholo, Gabriel Ferreira; Pereira, Antônio Alves; Rezende, Juliana Costa de; Botelho, Cesar Elias; Oliveira, Antônio Carlos Baião de; Silva, Felipe Lopes daThis paper presents the results of progeny 1190-1170-2, which was recorded as ‘MGS Travessia’ and selected based on its performance in the state of Minas Gerais.
