    Nutritional characteristics of conilon coffee genotypes grown in transition altitude with water management in soil

    The modification of water management in the Conilon coffee (Coffea canephora) crop is a possible strategy to improve nutritional management efficiency and ensure better use of the genotypes for regions of transitional altitude. The objective of this study was to evaluate the nutritional characteristics of 27 genotypes of C. canephora and submit them to two water management schemes in soil. The goal was to find evidence of higher leaf contents, exports, and nutrient recycling potential in the productive branches of various genotypes. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design with three replications in a split-plot scheme. The treatment consisted of 27 genotypes of C. canephora and two water management schemes in soil (“Irrigated” and “Rainfed”). Nutritional content in leaves, exported by fruits, and pruned (leaves and stem of plagiotropic branches) recyclable contents were evaluated for nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Variations were observed among genotypes for all the parameters evaluated in both water management in soil. However, significant homogeneous groups were formed among the genotypes in the irrigated management. Furthermore, the genotypes showed distinct nutritional characteristics in response to water management in the soil. Genotypes 108 and 302 had higher nutritional content and were exported by fruits, regardless of soil water management.

    Implications of the cut type and apex length of stem cuttings used for the production of plantlets of Conilon coffee

    Producing plantlets of Conilon coffee within the specific recommendations and with a high level of quality is fundamental since it is capable of promoting the initial development of the crops. To identify the best protocol to prepare the stem cuttings is fundamental to the process of plantlet production of the species. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the implications of the type of apex cutting and the length of the remaining apex of stem cuttings to produce plantlets of Conilon coffee (Coffea canephora). To this end, two trials were conducted in the Marilândia Experimental Farm (Instituto Capixaba de Pesquisa, Assistência Técnica e Extensão Rural, Marilândia-ES). The first trial evaluated the types of apex cutting (straight or bevel cut), and the second trial studied the different lengths of the remaining apex (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 cm). Characteristics of the vegetative growth and photosynthetic traits of the plantlets of Conilon coffee were evaluated after 120 days of cultivation in a nursery. The biomass accumulation of the plantlets of Conilon coffee produced by stem cutting may be favored by the use of bevel cut on the apex. The length of the remaining apex does not seem to have a expressive effect over the quality or growth of the plantlets, being only possible to observe effects for leaf area and biomass accumulation.

    Impact of drying methods over the germinative potenti al of conilon coffee of late maturation

    This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different drying methods (regarding temperature and drying time) over the seed moisture and germination of seeds of Coffea canephora, harvested from genotypes of late maturation. For this end, seeds from selected genotypes were harvested and dried using two different methods: drying at 25 ˚C with natural circulation of air and drying at 35 ˚C with artificial circulation of air. The seeds were evaluated to quantify the loss of moisture content, and their germinative potential was assessed by parameters of germination speed, and the proportion of seedlings with healthy germination originated from them. The results show it is possible to apply different drying methods; using different systems, temperatures and times of exposure; to decrease the moisture content of seeds of C. canephora, from 50% (freshly harvested seeds from genotypes of late maturation, in July) to under 18% (dried seeds). Even if the initial stages of the drying process, while the seeds still present high moisture content, are similar for both methods, the method with artificial circulation of air at 35 ˚C promotes the drying speed and is able to achieve the lower levels of seed moisture using less than half of the time required by method with natural circulation of air at 25 ˚C. This faster moisture removal, however, has negative impacts over the germinative potential of the seeds, which are not observed for seeds subjected to the slow natural drying.

    Conilon coffee yield using the programmed pruning cycle and different cultivation densities

    Determining the correct population of plants and number of orthotropic stems to be kept per area, along with optimal pruning management, is very important for crops of Coffea canephora. The aim of this work was to improve conilon coffee cropping management, evaluating the influence of the programmed pruning cycle with different combinations of spacing and numbers of orthotropic stems per plant on crop yield. Two experiments were carried out: one with smaller spacing and lower numbers of stems per plant, and another with larger spacing and higher numbers of stems per plant. Both assays followed a triple factorial scheme 2 x 3 x 4 (2 spacing x 3 numbers of stems per plant x 4 harvests) in a random block statistical design, using four replications and 11 plants pen plot. The results show that a reduction in spacing associated with an increase in number of stems per plant has a positive effect on the conilon coffee yield.

    Estimativa de parâmetros genéticos de grupos de clones de café conilon

    O cultivo de Coffea canephora var. kouilouensis De Wild (Conilon) é de grande importância no Espírito Santo e suas populações, normalmente, apresentam expressiva variabilidade genética. Objetivou-se, neste trabalho, a avaliação de três grupos de genótipos de café Conilon, distintos de acordo com seus ciclos de maturação, para a estimativa de parâmetros genéticos de diferentes características agronômicas, visando conhecer melhor sua estrutura genética. Foram realizadas estimativas de parâmetros genéticos obtidas em três experimentos dispostos de acordo com o delineamento estatístico em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições e cinco plantas por parcela experimental. Foram feitas análises de variância individuais e conjuntas para estimar parâmetros genéticos e inferir sobre a variabilidade genética de seis características agronômicas: ciclo de maturação, produtividade, índice de avaliação visual, vigor, porte e tamanho de frutos. Os resultados indicam que os grupos de clones estudados apresentaram alta produtividade e grande variabilidade genética quanto à maioria das características, não ocorrendo tendência de superioridade de um grupo de clones em relação ao outro. Os grupos de genótipos de café Conilon avaliados no presente estudo, apresentaram grande potencial para serem utilizado com êxito em programas de melhoramento genético, visando à produtividade e as demais características, no sul do Espírito Santo.
