Produção e caracterização de carvão ativado produzido a partir do defeito preto, verde, ardido (PVA) do café
(Sociedade Brasileira de Química, 2009) Ramos, Paulize H.; Guerreiro, Mário C.; Resende, Eliane C. de; Gonçalves, Maraísa
The black, green and sour coffee defect (PVA) contributes with 20% of the total coffee production. It should be separate from the normal coffee grains in order to improve the final quality of the beverage. In this way, the present work has the objective to use the PVA reject for the production of activated carbon. The activated carbon (CA) was prepared from PVA defect using zinc chloride as activating agent. The prepared material (CA PVA) was characterized and the adsorption tests were carried out using as organic models methylene blue (AM) and reactive red (VR). The CA PVA revealed to be more efficient in the removal of the organic contaminants compared to a commercial activated carbon.

Preparação e caracterização de carvão ativado produzido a partir de resíduos do beneficiamento do café
(Sociedade Brasileira de Química, 2008) Brum, Sarah Silva; Bianchi, Maria Lucia; Silva, Vanésia Liane da; Gonçalves, Maraísa; Guerreiro, Mário César; Oliveira, Luiz Carlos Alves de
Coffee fruit processing is one of the most polluting activities in agriculture due to the large amount of waste generated in the process. In this work, coffee parchment was employed as precursor for the production of carbons activated with ZnCl2 (CAP). The material was characterized using N2 adsorption/desorption at 77 K, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The material showed a surface area of 521.6 m²g-1 and microporous structure. CAP was applied as adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue dye in aqueous medium. The adsorption capacity was found to be about 188.7 mg g-1.

Application of carbon composite adsorbents prepared from coffee waste and clay for the removal of reactive dyes from aqueous solutions
(Sociedade Brasileira de Química, 2015) Santos, Davis C. dos; Adebayo, Matthew A.; Lima, Eder C.; Pereira, Simone F. P.; Cataluña, Renato; Sauier, Caroline; Thue, Pascal S.; Machado, Fernando M.
A novel carbon composite was prepared from a mixture of coffee waste and clay with inorganic:organic ratio of 1.3 (CC-1.3). The mixture was pyrolysed at 700 °C. Considering the application of this adsorbent for removal of anionic dyes, the CC-1.3 was treated with a 6 mol L−1 HCl for 24 h to obtain ACC-1.3. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), N2 adsorption/desorption curves, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD) were used for characterisation of CC-1.3 and ACC-1.3 carbon adsorbents. The adsorbents were effectively utilised for removal of reactive blue 19 (RB-19) and reactive violet 5 (RV-5) textile dyes from aqueous solutions. The maximum amounts of RB-19 dye adsorbed at 25 °C are 63.59 (CC-1.3) and 110.6 mg g−1 (ACC-1.3), and 54.34 (CC-1.3) and 94.32 mg g−1 (ACC-1.3) for RV-5 dye. Four simulated dye-house effluents were used to test the application of the adsorbents for treatment of effluents.

Sorption isotherms and isosteric heat of pericarp and endosperm tissues of arabica coffee fruit
(Associação Brasileira de Engenharia Agrícola, 2020) Dias, Camila de A.; Andrade, Ednilton T. de; Lemos, Isabella A.; Borém, Flávio M.; Barros, Ezequiel A.
The aim of this study was to evaluate and model the hygroscopic equilibrium and isosteric heat curves of pericarp and endosperm tissues of arabica (Coffea arabica) coffee fruit, in different temperature and relative humidity conditions. Sorption isotherms were drawn under temperatures from 20°C to 70°C and relative humidity ranging between 10% and 90% until the product reached the equilibrium water content with the environment. The experiment was set up in a 4 × 4 factorial scheme (four relative humidity of the drying air and three tissues of the coffee cherry pericarp + endosperm [1: exocarp + part of the mesocarp, 2: mesocarp, 3: endocarp, 4: endosperm]), in a completely randomized design, with three repetitions. The results were examined by analysis of variance and regression using the STATISTICA 5.0 statistical software. Among the analyzed models, the ones that best fit the experimental data were modified GAB, for exocarp + part of mesocarp and mesocarp, modified Henderson, for endocarp, and Sabbab for endosperm. It was observed that, for all treatments, the lower water contents required a higher amount of energy to reach the equilibrium water content, and the integral isosteric heat decreased with the increasing equilibrium water content.
