    Chemical attributes of an Oxisol with the addition of conilon coffee straw biochar

    The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of increasing rates of biochar produced with coffee straw, at two pyrolysis temperatures, on the chemical attributes of an Oxisol cultivated with conilon coffee (Coffea canephora) and on the nutrient content of coffee tree leaves. Treatments consisted of pyrolysis at two temperatures (350 and 600 °C) and of five biochar rates (0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 Mg ha-1). The following soil chemical attributes were evaluated: pH in water; P, K, Ca, Mg, Al, H+Al, Zn, Cu, Fe, and Mn contents; effective and potential cation exchange capacity (CEC); sum of bases (SB); base (V) and aluminium (m) saturation; and N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu, Fe, and Mn contents in the leaves. The biochar produced at 600°C, at rates of 10 and 15 Mg ha-1, promoted a greater K release into the soil. Regardless of temperature, coffee straw biochar increased K and P availability, sum of bases, base saturation, and CEC in the soil, but did not influence macro- and micronutrient contents in the leaves. The addition of increasing rates of coffee straw biochar in the soil increases P, K, Mg, SB, CEC, and V, regardless of pyrolysis temperature.

    Ecotoxicological Effects of Biochar Obtained from Spent Coffee Grounds

    The objective of this work is to investigate the conversion of spent coffee grounds (SCG) into biochar (BSC) and the ecotoxicological effects of the product obtained. The SCG and BSC were characterized by characterized by different techniques (TGA/DTG, FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDS, and EDXRF). Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR) was used to characterize the aqueous extract of BSC. The inhibitory effect on lettuce (Lactuca sativa) germination was investigated. Besides, antimicrobial activity evaluation trials were conducted with Azospirillum brasilense and Trichoderma spp. The results showed that in the BSC production process, the extractives and lignocellulosic components in the SCG were partly decomposed. Tests conducted with microorganisms did not reveal any toxic effect of BSC. However, high phytotoxicity against lettuce was recorded for rate 100 t/ha of BSC. This effect was associated with the presence of carboxylic acids identified by 1H NMR in the BSC extract aqueous.

    Kinetic parameters study for the slow pyrolysis of coffee residues based on thermogravimetric analysis

    Thermal decomposition of coffee husks was investigated by thermogravimetric analyses. The proximate, ultimate and composition analyses were performed. Thermogravimetric tests were realized, the material was heated to 1173 K using five heating rates: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 K min-1. The kinetic parameters were estimated using the methods of Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose and Friedman, the distributed activation energy model and the independent parallel reactions model. The isoconversional models of Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose and Friedman showed the dependence between determined values of activation energy and mass conversion, the activation energy values varied from 1437.39 to 199.22 kJ mol-1 for Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose and from 127.81 to 230.35 kJ mol-1 for Friedman model. The values of activation energy were determined for Miura-Maki method; varying from 137.39 to 199.22 kJ mol-1. The model of parallel and independent reactions showed the presence of six different reactions (with activation energy values varying from 42.0 to 214.2 kJ mol-1) occurring during coffee husks pyrolysis, indicating a complex reaction. Currently, works regarding the determination of kinetic parameters for coffee husks pyrolysis are not common. The present work is the first report using the model of parallel and independent reactions to estimate kinetic parameters for pyrolysis of coffee husks, a residue widely generated worldwide.

    Production and characterization of the bio-oil obtained by the fast pyrolysis of spent coffee grounds of the soluble coffee industry

    Agro-industrial wastes are abundant and low-cost sources of energy and chemicals. Biomass account for 14% of the world’s energy production. Industrial residues of production of soluble coffee (spent coffee grounds - SCG) have great potential due to its large-scale production and can be transformed by pyrolysis, in liquid, solid and gaseous products with applications from energy to chemicals. This work has the objective of producing bio-oil from the pyrolysis of industrial SCG, characterize it by chromatography and indicate its possible applications. As SGC contains a large amount of glycerides, they were extracted from SGC before the pyrolysis, aiming to obtain a better bio-oil from the residue. The yield in vegetable oil was 5.2% and its analyses showed that 50% are saturated acids (mainly palmitic 27.6%) and other 50% are unsaturated ones (mainly linoleic acid 35.3%). This composition qualifies this oil for biodiesel purposes. The residue (SGC after extraction) was submitted to pyrolysis, yielding 30% in liquid products, being 6% bio-oil. The bio-oil was analyzed by gas chromatography being identified free fatty acids, hydrocarbons, phenols and N-compounds. The heteroatomic compounds limit the use as biofuel but can be interesting for the pharmaceutical, agrochemical and fine chemicals industries.
