Phytotoxicity and leaf anatomy of young coffee plants subjected to herbicides exclusively and in associations
(Editora UFLA, 2020) Rodrigues, Rafael Jorge Almeida; Gonçalves, Adenilson Henrique; Menicucci Netto, Pedro; Carneiro, Arthur Henrique Cruvinel; Castanheira, Dalyse Toledo; Guimarães, Rubens José; Carvalho, Gladyston Rodrigues
The lack of work force and the damage that weeds can cause to coffee plants are the causes of the growing demand for selective herbicides to be used in coffee farming. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the phytotoxicity symptoms and leaf anatomical characteristics of young coffee plants submitted to application isolated herbicides and also in associations. An experiment was carried out in a protected environment in randomized blocks: four replicates with coffee seedlings (Coffea arabica L.) cultivar “Topázio MG-1190”, grown in pots with a capacity of 11 liters of substrate. The herbicides applied, in isolation, were: pyrazosulfuron-ethyl (0.015 kg ha-1), saflufenacil (0.049 kg ha-1), imazetaphyr (0.1 kg ha-1), iodosulfuron-methyl (0.0035 kg ha-1), chlorimuron-ethyl (0.015 kg ha-1) and sethoxydim (0.184 kg ha-1). The latter was used in associations with the others. In addition, a control without herbicides was used. Phytotoxicity symptoms were evaluated up to 49 days after application (DAA) and anatomical characteristics at 65 DAA. Saflufenacil exclusively and inassociation with sethoxydim caused visual phytotoxicity symptoms in the leaves and negatively influence in the characteristics of the epidermis thickness of the adaxial face (EAD), thickness of the palisade parenchyma (PAP), thickness of the spongy parenchyma (SPP) and thickness of the mesophyll (MES). The other herbicides, isolated or in associations, didn’t cause phytotoxicity symptoms, but had negative influence in the anatomical parameters of the leaf blade. However they did not interfere with the paradermic parameters and the vascular bundle.

(Editora UFLA, 2021) Vilela, Diego Júnior Martins; Coelho, Larissa Sousa; Silva, Douglas Ramos Guelfi; Carvalho, Gladyston Rodrigues; Botelho, Cesar Elias; Ferreira, André Dominghetti
Nutritional efficiency is a term used to characterize plants in their capacity to uptake and use nutrients, being related to the efficiency of uptake, translocation, and utilization of nutrients. Different coffee genotypes are expected to exhibit variability in their nutritional efficiency. This work aimed to evaluate the phosphorus nutritional efficiency in arabica coffee genotypes. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse of the Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária de Minas Gerais (EPAMIG), located in the municipality of Lavras – Minas Gerais, Brazil. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design, in a 10x2 factorial scheme (10 arabica coffee genotypes and two dosages of phosphate fertilization), with four replicates. Each experimental plot consisted of one pot with ten liters of soil, with one plant. The cultivars Catiguá MG2, MGS Ametista and Sarchimor MG 8840 are neither efficient nor responsive to phosphate fertilization. Progeny H 6-47-10 pl. 3 and the cultivar Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144 are not efficient but are responsive to phosphate fertilization. The cultivars Paraíso MG H 419-1, Topázio MG 1190 and MGS Paraíso 2 are efficient but are not responsive to phosphate fertilization. The cultivars Bourbon Amarelo IAC J10 and MGS Aranãs are efficient and responsive to phosphate fertilization.

Physiological aspects and yield in coffee progenies with large beans
(Editora UFLA, 2021) Pavan, João Paulo Silva; Santos, Cyntia Stephânia dos; Freitas, Ana Flávia de; Carvalho, Samuel Pereira de; Carvalho, Gladyston Rodrigues
Genetic coffee breeding is aimed at increasing yield associated with tolerance or resistance to biotic and abiotic factors, besides providing a better beverage quality and supplying the demand for bigger beans. The efficiency in photosynthetic activity can limit produce and diversify genotypes, mainly under adverse environmental conditions. Consequently, the importance of selection of Coffea arabica L. regarding these characteristics stands out. Therefore, the objective of this paper was to measure the physiological characterization and yield of Coffea arabica L. progenies with large beans “Big Coffee VL”. Twelve productive progenies were selected and classified according to fruit size (“small”, “medium” and “large”), which were: S14, S23, S34, S36, M4, M5, M14, M20, L10, L12, L17 and L31. Net photosynthetic rate (A), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration rate (E), water use efficiency (WUE), internal carbon (Ci), intercellular CO2 concentration in the mesophyll were evaluated on the current external CO2 concentration (Ci/Ca), besides vapor pressure deficit (VPD), leaf temperature (Tleaf), indirect determination of the relative levels of chlorophylls a, b and total, in addition to bean yield in two crops. The Tocher grouping resulted in the formation of 4 groups, and progenies M4, L10 and S34 remained in isolated groups.Progeny L10 stood out for higher mean values of A, gs and Ci; the opposite behavior was observed in progeny S34. Progeny M4 is noteworthy as the one with the highest yield in the two years considered, in addition to presenting high photosynthetic rate and chlorophyll indexes. It is concluded that the progenies of “Big Coffee VL” show variability for physiological parameters and productivity. Progenies S14, M4 and L10 stood out, and S14 was more efficient in the use of water; M4 was the most productive and L10 stood out in terms of gas exchange.

(Editora UFLA, 2020) Maia, Pedro Lage; Tassone, Guilherme Augusto Teixeira; Nadaleti, Denis Henrique Silva; Botelho, Cesar Elias; Botelho, Deila Magna dos Santos; Moreira, Priscila Carvalho; Carvalho, Gladyston Rodrigues
In this paper, we aimed at selecting genotypes of Coffea arabica L. that are responsive to framework pruning, with high productive potential and desirable agricultural features. We evaluated 18 progenies in the F5 generation, 8 of them being from the group Catucaí (breeding of seedlings of Red Catuaí with coffee seeds of the Icatu germplasm) and ten descendants from the Timor Hybrid (breeding of the Red and Yellow Catuaí with the Timor Hybrid), as well as two commercial cultivars as control (Tupi IAC 1669-33 and Obatã IAC 1669-20). The experiment was carried out at the experimental field of the Federal University of Lavras. The coffee was pruned in August 2014 after the sixth crop and once again in August 2016, being two cycles in the “safra zero” system. The design used was in randomized blocks (RBD) with three repetitions and 20 treatments (18 progenies and two commercial cultivars) totaling 60 experimental plots. We evaluated the area under the progress curve of incidence and severity of leaf rust and cercosporiosis, the productivity (sacs ha-1), sieve #16 and over (%), mocha-type grains (%) and apparent specific mass of grains (tonm-3). The genotype 12 (H516-2-1-1-18-1-4) was responsive to the framework pruning and kept its productivity stable in both pruning cycles, being efficient in such system of crop conduction, besides presenting low incidence and severity of coffee leaf rust and cercosporiosis and high sieve.

(Editora UFLA, 2019-07) Fassio, Larissa de Oliveira; Pereira, Rosemary Gualberto Fonseca Alvarenga; Malta, Marcelo Ribeiro; Liska, Gilberto Rodrigues; Sousa, Maísa Mancini Matioli; Carvalho, Gladyston Rodrigues; Pereira, Antônio Alves
This study was developed to determine the beverage quality and the sensory profile of Coffea arabica accesses of the Germplasm Collection of Minas Gerais State in two consecutive harvests. Mature coffee fruits from 49 accesses were selectively harvested in the 2015 and 2016 harvests, and after processing and drying they were sensorially evaluated by a team of trained judges in accordance to the protocols of the Specialty Coffee Association. The data were analyzed by Principal Component Analysis, Cluster Hierarchical Analysis, and Content Analysis. The year of harvest influences the scores of the sensory attributes of the beverage of some coffee accesses. The access 27 (Pacamara) stood out with the highest sensory score seen in the first year of harvest. The accesses 36 (Timor Hybrid UFV376-52) and 43 (BE5 WushWush) stood out for the final sensory score in the two years of evaluation. All accesses belonging to the Timor Hybrid Germplasm stood out in the beverage quality in the second year of harvest. A total of 139 sensory attribute descriptors were identified, and the content analysis showed different levels for the frequency of terms in each access group formed as a function of quality. The Germplasm Collection of Minas Gerais has a wide variability for the production of superior quality coffees, and the year of harvest influences to a greater or lesser degree the potential of quality of the accesses.

(Editora UFLA, 2019-04) Pereira, Dyanna Rangel; Aguiar, João Augusto Rodrigues de; Nadaleti, Denis Henrique Silva; Fassio, Larissa de Oliveira; Carvalho, João Paulo Felicori; Carvalho, Samuel Pereira de; Carvalho, Gladyston Rodrigues
Quality, in a condition of typical cultivation of the Cerrado. The trial was carried out in the municipality of Monte Carmelo - MG, in randomized block design, with four replicates. Morphoagronomic characteristics were evaluated 15 months after the implantation of the crop. The productivity and, subsequently, the quality of the beans, were evaluated at 18 months. Statistical analyzes were performed using the Genes software. The data were submitted to analysis of variance. The F test was used to determine the significance of treatments. The means were grouped by the Scott-Knott test (1974) at 5% probability and the experimental precision was verified by the estimation of the experimental variation coefficient (CV) and the selective accuracy. The sensory attributes were evaluated in a radar diagram, called “Sensogram”. Genetic variability was observed among cultivars for the vegetative characters. The cultivars Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144 and MGS Aranãs stood out as more productive, with a high percentage of sieve 16 and above and low percentage of grain type mocha. All the cultivars stood out as special, with emphasis on the cultivar Bourbon Amarelo IAC J10 in the wet processing and Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144 in the natural processing.

(Editora UFLA, 2019-01) Tasson, Guilherme Augusto Teixeira; Nadaleti, Denis Henrique Silva; Carvalho, Gladyston Rodrigues; Pereira, Fernanda Aparecida Castro; Andrade, Vinícius Teixeira; Botelho, César Elias
Coffee cultivars that are better adapted and more productive can help reduce production costs and make coffee cultivation more profitable. The Mundo Novo cultivar has stood out as one of the most productive cultivars of Coffea arabica L. Therefore, the aim of this work was to select Mundo Novo progenies with high bean yield capacity and with other agronomic characteristics of interest. We evaluated the bean yield, seed size, plant height, upper and lower canopy diameter, stem diameter, and plant vigor of 24 F 4 progenies and one check cultivar. The experimental design consisted of a randomized complete block design with three replicates and experiments were carried out in two sites: São Sebastião do Paraíso (SSP) and Três Pontas (TP), MG, Brazil. The mixed model approach was used to calculate the genotypic value for each progeny, after which the selective accuracy and genetic gain of the two best progenies in each trait were calculated, the simultaneous selection index of Mulamba and Mock was used to select the two most promising progenies at each site. In general, the genetic gain was higher at SSP than at TP. In SSP, the most promising progenies were 1 [IAC376-2 (M. Novo) x IAC386-17 (M. Novo)] and 20 [IAC382-10 (M. Novo) x IAC388-20 (M. Novo)]. In TP, the most promising progeny was 22 [H1535/181 (M. Novo) x (S795) 1344/10/5], together with the check (Mundo Novo IAC379/19). The highest selection gain was expressed for bean size (the percentage of beans retained in sieve 17).

(Editora UFLA, 2017-10) Vilela, Diego Júnior Martins; Carvalho, Gladyston Rodrigues; Botelho, Cesar Elias; Carvalho, Alex Mendonça de; Praxedes, Marina Angélico; Santos, Milena Christy; Fernandes, Fernando Costa

(Editora UFLA, 2017-10) Dias, Rodrigo Elias Batista Almeida; Carvalho, Gladyston Rodrigues; Botelho, Cesar Elias; Carvalho, Alex Mendonça de; Carvalho, João Paulo Felicori; Cardoso, Diego Abreu
