    Physiological aspects and yield in coffee progenies with large beans

    Genetic coffee breeding is aimed at increasing yield associated with tolerance or resistance to biotic and abiotic factors, besides providing a better beverage quality and supplying the demand for bigger beans. The efficiency in photosynthetic activity can limit produce and diversify genotypes, mainly under adverse environmental conditions. Consequently, the importance of selection of Coffea arabica L. regarding these characteristics stands out. Therefore, the objective of this paper was to measure the physiological characterization and yield of Coffea arabica L. progenies with large beans “Big Coffee VL”. Twelve productive progenies were selected and classified according to fruit size (“small”, “medium” and “large”), which were: S14, S23, S34, S36, M4, M5, M14, M20, L10, L12, L17 and L31. Net photosynthetic rate (A), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration rate (E), water use efficiency (WUE), internal carbon (Ci), intercellular CO2 concentration in the mesophyll were evaluated on the current external CO2 concentration (Ci/Ca), besides vapor pressure deficit (VPD), leaf temperature (Tleaf), indirect determination of the relative levels of chlorophylls a, b and total, in addition to bean yield in two crops. The Tocher grouping resulted in the formation of 4 groups, and progenies M4, L10 and S34 remained in isolated groups.Progeny L10 stood out for higher mean values of A, gs and Ci; the opposite behavior was observed in progeny S34. Progeny M4 is noteworthy as the one with the highest yield in the two years considered, in addition to presenting high photosynthetic rate and chlorophyll indexes. It is concluded that the progenies of “Big Coffee VL” show variability for physiological parameters and productivity. Progenies S14, M4 and L10 stood out, and S14 was more efficient in the use of water; M4 was the most productive and L10 stood out in terms of gas exchange.

    Morphoagronomic and sensory performance of coffee cultivars in initial stage of development in cerrado mineiro

    Quality, in a condition of typical cultivation of the Cerrado. The trial was carried out in the municipality of Monte Carmelo - MG, in randomized block design, with four replicates. Morphoagronomic characteristics were evaluated 15 months after the implantation of the crop. The productivity and, subsequently, the quality of the beans, were evaluated at 18 months. Statistical analyzes were performed using the Genes software. The data were submitted to analysis of variance. The F test was used to determine the significance of treatments. The means were grouped by the Scott-Knott test (1974) at 5% probability and the experimental precision was verified by the estimation of the experimental variation coefficient (CV) and the selective accuracy. The sensory attributes were evaluated in a radar diagram, called “Sensogram”. Genetic variability was observed among cultivars for the vegetative characters. The cultivars Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144 and MGS Aranãs stood out as more productive, with a high percentage of sieve 16 and above and low percentage of grain type mocha. All the cultivars stood out as special, with emphasis on the cultivar Bourbon Amarelo IAC J10 in the wet processing and Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144 in the natural processing.

    Selection of coffee progenies with large beans resistant to rust and cercospora leaf spot

    Rust is the main disease of coffee. Recently, cercospora leaf spot has grown in importance, intensifying defoliation and decreasing grain yield in Coffea arabica. The Big Coffee VL is a variety of C. arabica, with large beans. There is still little information on this variety. Because of this, the aim of this study was to use a mixed model approach to select the best progenies of “Big Coffee VL” for resistance to rust and cercospora leaf spot. There were evaluated 12 progenies with high bean yields. Based on bean size, leaves and plant size, plants within each progeny were classified as “small” (P), “medium” (M) and “large” (G). The experimental design was in blocks completely randomized, with six replicates and one plant per plot. Six measurements were carried out every 15 days for each plant by selecting 20 fully exposed leaves with higher and lower sun exposures. The measurements summarized disease severity using two diagrammatic scales to obtain the area of the leaf under rust or Cercospora leaf spot. A mixed model approach was used to calculate genotypic value (GV) and heritability estimates. The Mulamba and Mock index was used to select the most resistant progenies, in which the sum of rankings was weighted by a heritability value. Five progenies were selected; three progenies were G (G17, G9, and G12), one progeny was M (M5) and another progeny P (P23). Among these, M5 and P23 progenies are the most productive and may have potential use in future studies. This work presents the potential in investigating the new C. arabica variety.

    Incidence and severity of coffee leaf rust, cercosporiosis and coffee leaf miner in coffee progenies

    Coffee leaf rust is the main disease of this crop, however cercosporiosis and coffee leaf miner can also cause significant damage when they reach high levels of infestation. Plant genetic improvement for resistance is one of the best tools for controlling plant diseases. The objective in this work was to identify F 3 progenies of Coffea arabica with resistance to coffee leaf rust, which present a lower incidence and severity of cercosporiosis and coffee leaf miner. The treatments were constituted by 10 progenies, besides two cultivars coffee leaf rust susceptible, used as a control. The experimental design was a randomized block design (RBD), with two replicates, each block consisting of 12 plots randomly distributed, each corresponding to one treatments. The following characteristics were evaluated: coffee leaf rust intensity and severity, cercosporiosis and coffee leaf miner, plants vegetative vigor, grain maturity uniformity and plants height. The progeny averages were grouped by the Scott & Knott test at 5% probability. Progenies 27, 30 and 15 were selected, since they presented low incidence in relation to coffee leaf rust, cercosporiosis and coffee leaf miner, and will be used to continue the breeding program.

    Selection of Coffea arabica L. hybrids using mixed models with different structures of variance-covariance matrices

    This study aimed to evaluate different structures of variance-covariance matrices in modeling of productive performance of coffee genotypes over the years, and select hybrids of Coffea arabica using mixed models. A mixed linear model was used to estimate variance components, heritability coefficients, and prediction of genetic values of hybrids and cultivars. Three commercial cultivars and eight hybrids of C. arabica L. were evaluated. The field production after acclimatization of seedlings was conducted in March 2006. The yield averages from 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2014 agricultural years were evaluated. The selection criteria of models were used to test 10 structures of variance-covariance matrices, and later a model was chosen to estimate the components of variance, heritability coefficients, and prediction of genetic values. According to Bayesian information criterion (BIC), the best structure was ARMA (Autoregressive Moving Average); however, considering the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and corrected Akaike Information Criterion (AICC), the CSH (Heterogeneous Composite Symmetric) was indicated. The Spearman correlation between the genotypic values ​​obtained in the models with ARMA and CSH type R matrix was 0.84. The high and positive correlation indicates that the best model could involve the R matrix with ARMA or CSH structure. The heritability of individual genotypes differed from heritability in broad sense, which considers the independence among agricultural years. Hybrids with higher performance were identified by ordering the genotypic effects, among them, H 2.2, H 4.2, and H 6.1 hybrids were highlighted.

    Propagação vegetativa do cafeeiro (Coffea arabica L.) por miniestacas

    A introdução de métodos que permitem a clonagem do cafeeiro pode ser útil em programas de melhoramento genético e até mesmo para a produção comercial de mudas. Entre os métodos de propagação vegetativa, a estaquia tem possibilitado melhores resultados, no entanto, um dos entraves para a produção em escala comercial é a quantidade reduzida de ramos ortotrópicos produzidos pela planta matriz. Uma alternativa seria a utilização de miniestaquia, a qual é amplamente usada na produção de mudas de eucalipto. Objetivou-se com este trabalho estudar o emprego da técnica de miniestaquia na formação de mudas clonais de Coffea arabica . em diferentes volumes de tubetes. Foram avaliados cinco tipos de miniestacas oriundas de diferentes porções do ramo ortotrópico (apical, semiapical, intermediária, semibasal e basal) e dois volumes de tubete (50 e 120 cm3). O experimento foi implantado em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado disposto em um esquema fatorial 5 x 2, com quatro repetições. Foram observadas diferenças apenas entre os tipos de miniestacas oriundas das diferentes porções dos ramos ortotrópicos. As miniestacas das porções semiapical, intermediárias e semibasal dos ramos ortotrópicos promovem melhor crescimento das mudas clonais de cafeeiros, independentemente do volume do tubete utilizado.

    Comportamento agronômico de progênies e cultivares de cafeeiro com resistência específica à ferrugem

    Objetivando-se avaliar a produtividade e outras características agronômicas de progênies e cultivares de cafeeiro com resistência específica à ferrugem, foi conduzido um experimento na Fazenda Experimental do MAPA/Fundação Procafé, em Varginha, MG. Este foi instalado em janeiro de 2003, em blocos inteiramente casualizados, com 12 progênies e duas cultivares, cinco repetições e quatro plantas por parcela. Foram avaliadas as características de produtividade média dos grãos, estádio de maturação dos grãos e classificação por peneira. Os dados obtidos foram submetidos à análise de variância e quando houve efeito significativo dos tratamentos, as médias foram comparadas por meio do teste de Scott-Knott. Com o intuito de possibilitar a seleção indireta buscou-se conhecer o grau de associação das características em estudo, por meio das estimativas de correlação fenotípica entre as características avaliadas. E, posteriormente, para verificar a variabilidade existente entre as progênies foram estimadas as distâncias genéticas pelo método das Distâncias Generalizadas de Mahalanobis. Os resultados obtidos permitem verificar a existência de variação entre as progênies e cultivares quando as características são avaliadas de forma isolada. Não é indicado aplicar a seleção indireta nas características avaliadas, pois a produtividade média dos grãos não está fortemente associada às demais características. As progênies Arara planta 418 e Catucaí Amarelo 20/15 são indicadas para futuros cruzamentos, tendo em vista que esses materiais genéticos são mais produtivos que a testemunha Catuaí Amarelo IAC 66/69 e apresentam divergência genética entre si. Essas informações podem subsidiar os programas de melhoramento com finalidades específicas, ao possibilitar a escolha adequada de genitores.

    Field performance of coffee progenies and cultivars with specific resistance to rust

    The aim of this research was to evaluate the yield and other agronomic characteristics of coffee progenies with specific resistance to rust. An experiment was carried out at the Experimental Farm of MAPA/Fundação Procafé (MAPA/ ProCoffee Foundation) in Varginha, MG, Brazil. The experiment was set up in January 2003 in a randomized complete block design with 12 progenies and two cultivars, five replicates and four plants per plot. The characteristics of average yield, maturation stage and screen analysis were asssessed. The data were subjected to analysis of variance and when there were significant effects from treatments, the means were compared by the Scott-Knott test. For the purpose of facilitating indirect selection, we sought to investigate the degree of association of the characteristics under study by means of the estimates of phenotypic correlation among the characteristics evaluated. Subsequently, genetic distances were estimated by the generalized Mahalanobis distance method to verify the variability among progenies. The results obtained allow us to verify the existence of variation among progenies and cultivars when the characteristics are evaluated separately. It is not recommended to apply indirect selection on the characteristics assessed because the average yield of coffee grains is not strongly associated with the other characteristics. The progenies Arara planta 418 and Catucaí Amarelo 20/15 are recommended for future crosses, considering that these genetic materials are more productive than the control Catuaí Amarelo IAC 66/69 and have genetic divergence. This information may help breeding programs for specific purposes upon enabling the appropriate choice of parents.

    Desenvolvimento de cafeeiros enxertados em Apoatã IAC 2258 cultivados no campo isento de nematóides

    Visando obter informações sobre o desenvolvimento de cafeeiros (Coffea arabica L.) enxertados ou não no porta enxerto Apoatã IAC 2258 (Coffea canephora Pierre ex A. Froehner) foi instalado e conduzido esse ensaio em campo isento de nematóides, de janeiro de 2004 a maio de 2005. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial (7 x 3), com parcelas subdivididas no tempo e quatro repetições, sendo sete cultivares de C. arabica e três tipos de mudas (enxertada, auto enxertada e pé franco) e quatro épocas de avaliação. Foram avaliadas altura de planta, número de ramos plagiotrópicos e número de nós nos ramos plagiotrópicos. Pelos resultado conclui-se que a muda enxertada não é superior à muda de pé franco para nenhuma característica avaliada, independentemente da cultivar. Foi observado efeito do estresse causado pela enxertia e efeito porta-enxerto Apoatã.

    Comportamento em condições de campo de cafeeiros (coffea arabica L.) propagados vegertativas e por semeadora

    A propagação vegetativa por meio do enraizamento de estacas é uma alternativa para a propagação de híbridos de Coffea arabica L. em escala comercial. Entretanto, para a utilização da propagação via enraizamento de estacas, é necessário o conhecimento das características de crescimento das plantas no campo. Assim, objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar o crescimento vegetativo e a primeira produção de plantas de Coffea arabica cv. Acaiá, provenientes de estaquia, bem como compará-las com plantas provenientes de semeadura. O experimento foi instalado em 2003 no Departamento de Agricultura da Universidade Federal de Lavras UFLA. Foram utilizadas mudas provenientes de estaquia, tratadas na fase de enraizamento com ácido indol butírico (AIB), nas concentrações de (0, 2000 e 4000 mg.L -1 ) com e sem aquecimento no leito de enraizamento. Como tratamento adicional, foram utilizadas mudas provenientes de semeadura. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, com três repetições e parcelas de seis plantas, sendo quatro plantas úteis. Avaliações do crescimento vegetativo e da produção possibilitaram concluir que plantas provenientes de estaquia, tratadas com AIB, apresentaram maior altura e produção em relação às não-tratadas. Observou-se maior número de pares de ramos plagiotrópicos e produção das plantas provenientes de estaquia em relação às plantas provenientes de semeadura.
