Coffee seedling growthafter legume cultivation in soils with contrasting phosphorus contents
(Editora UFLA, 2021) Pereira, Djalma Silva; Costa, Liovando Marciano da; Carmo, Davi Lopes do; Rocha, Ana Caroline Teixeira; Pereira, Antônio Alves
Coffee seedling growth depends on soil phosphorus (P) availability and may be influenced by from pre-cultivation with legumes. Efficient and sustainable ways to increase the bioavailability of P through the recovery of P adsorbed by the soil matrix should be sought. This study proposed to evaluate the growth and P-use efficiency of coffee seedlings cultivated in soils with different P availability after cultivation with legumes. The experiment was carried out in a fully randomized design. Treatments were arranged in a factorial scheme [(2 x 4) + 1]: two soil types, pre-cultivation with four legume species, and one control (without pre-cultivation). The studied soils comprised a Typical Acriferic Red Oxisol (LVwf) with low-P availability and a Typical Chernossolic Litholytic Entisol (RLm) with high-P availability. The legume species Crotalaria juncea, Cajanus cajan, Canavalia ensiformis, and Mucuna aterrima were previously cultivated for 45 days. Afterwards, coffee seedlings were transplanted to the pots, which were then grown for 120 days until evaluations. We assessed the following parameters: plant height (H), stem diameter (SD), shoot dry matter (SDM), root dry matter (RDM), total dry matter (TDM), and shoot contents of macronutrients. Our results showed that coffee seedlings grew more when cultivated in the high-P availability soil, with increments of 13.05% in H, 4.86% in SD, 46.98% in SDM, 17.61% in RDM, and 41.80% in TDM.We also observed an increase of 28.09% in shoot P contents for coffee seedlings grown in RLm. Moreover, pre-cultivation with C. juncea provided the largest increases in coffee seedling growth compared to the control. When grown after C. ensiformis cultivation, coffee seedlings had the highest shoot contents of P, Ca, Mg, and S, which, compared to control, increased by 45%, 39%, 18%, and 17%, respectively.

(Editora UFLA, 2019-07) Fassio, Larissa de Oliveira; Pereira, Rosemary Gualberto Fonseca Alvarenga; Malta, Marcelo Ribeiro; Liska, Gilberto Rodrigues; Sousa, Maísa Mancini Matioli; Carvalho, Gladyston Rodrigues; Pereira, Antônio Alves
This study was developed to determine the beverage quality and the sensory profile of Coffea arabica accesses of the Germplasm Collection of Minas Gerais State in two consecutive harvests. Mature coffee fruits from 49 accesses were selectively harvested in the 2015 and 2016 harvests, and after processing and drying they were sensorially evaluated by a team of trained judges in accordance to the protocols of the Specialty Coffee Association. The data were analyzed by Principal Component Analysis, Cluster Hierarchical Analysis, and Content Analysis. The year of harvest influences the scores of the sensory attributes of the beverage of some coffee accesses. The access 27 (Pacamara) stood out with the highest sensory score seen in the first year of harvest. The accesses 36 (Timor Hybrid UFV376-52) and 43 (BE5 WushWush) stood out for the final sensory score in the two years of evaluation. All accesses belonging to the Timor Hybrid Germplasm stood out in the beverage quality in the second year of harvest. A total of 139 sensory attribute descriptors were identified, and the content analysis showed different levels for the frequency of terms in each access group formed as a function of quality. The Germplasm Collection of Minas Gerais has a wide variability for the production of superior quality coffees, and the year of harvest influences to a greater or lesser degree the potential of quality of the accesses.

Genetic progress in coffee progenies by different selection criteria
(Editora UFLA, 2014-07) Rezende, Juliana Costa de; Botelho, Cesar Elias; Oliveira, Antônio Carlos Baião de; Silva, Felipe Lopes da; Carvalho, Gladyston Rodrigues; Pereira, Antônio Alves
In order to investigate the aspects related to the use of selection indexes in Coffea arabica breeding, analytical procedures were used: index based on the sum of ranks of Mulamba and Mock (ISR), index of desired gains of Pesek and Baker (DGI), classic index of Smith and Hazel (CI), base index of Williams (BI), and direct and indirect selection (DIS). Thirty-nine progenies were evaluated in the 4 th generation by selfing after the 2 nd backcross between “Catuai” and “Mundo Novo”. The evaluations were realized in coffee plants from 30 months old on, having the following characteristics: yield of eight harvests, classification for blend 16 and over, percentage of floating fruits, vegetative vigor and percentage of flat beans. The analytical procedures of selection indexes showed possibilities of applications in advanced generations of breeding being superior when compared with DIS. The DGI was not appropriate in the situation analyzed in this work. The selection based on CI and BI was the criteria that showed the best results in terms of gains in yield and grain size, and in the distribution of gains in the other characteristics.

Reação de genótipos de cafeeiro (Coffea arabica L.) a Meloidogyne exigua população sul de Minas
(Editora UFLA, 2012-01) Pereira, Thamiris Bandoni; Salgado, Sônia Maria de Lima; Carvalho, Gladyston Rodrigues; Pereira, Antônio Alves; Ferreira, André Dominghetti; Oliveira, Luiz Paulo Vilela
