    Evaluation of slow release fertilizer on the initial developmentand coffee production

    The objective in this work was to evaluate the efficiency of slow release fertilizer in seedling production, initial development and first coffee production. The research was carried out at Sitio Santa Felicidade, Campestre - MG, Brazil, in a randomized block design with two treatments and ten replicates, totaling 20 experimental plots. Coffee seedlings were produced using Ciclus Substrate (20% N, 22% P2O5 and 5% K2O) and conventional fertilizers 4 kg simple super phosphate (18% P2O5) and 0.25 kg Potassium Chloride (58% K2O). The variables evaluated were size, dry and fresh matter of the shoot and root system, and the seedlings were transplanted to the field and those from Ciclus Substrate received in the first year Ciclus NS (30% N) and in the second year. NK (19-00-19) and conventionally produced with conventional fertilizers (20-00-20 and 25-00-25 respectively), the variables evaluated were: shoot growth, length and number of plagiotropic branch internodes Slow release fertilizer ciclus Substrate has been found to be a viable technology for the production of arabica coffee seedlings, coffee planting NS provides good plant development and coffee producing NK provides good plant growth and higher productivity.

    Quality of specialty natural coffee stored in different packages in Brazil and abroad

    A challenge in the packaging and export of specialty coffees is to avoid green coffee bean storage and transport conditions that negatively affect the sensory quality of the roasted beans. The present study evaluated green beans of specialty coffees in eight types of packaging stored in a warehouse in the municipality of Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, for 18 months (Brazilian phase). This coffees were also subjected to sea transport and subsequent storage at a specialty coffee import company (export phase) in the United States, where it remained stored for 14 months. Physical, chemical, and sensory analyses of the beans were performed in the Brazilian phase and export phase. Green coffee beans stored in high-barrier packages had the best conserved quality. Packages with little or no barrier were not adequate for packaging or exporting specialty coffees. Beans in high-barrier packaging maintained their quality for long periods, which are therefore recommended for specialty coffee storage and export.

    Sites and sampling tools in the soil fertility evaluation of coffee plants in production

    In soil sampling, the collection site and the tool used may induce errors that can compromise the results of the chemical analysis and, consequently, the definition of corrective and fertilizer doses. The objective in this study was to evaluate soil sampling sites and tools in a coffee growing area. The experiment was carried out in a field in the municipality of Alfenas-MG, in a 35-year coffee field. A randomized block design was used in a 3 x 5 factorial scheme and 4 replications, totaling 60 experimental units. The treatments consisted of 3 sampling sites: in the fertilizer strip (located in the projection of the plant canopy); between rows; and in the total area, with 1/3 of the samples collected under the canopy and close to the plant stem, 1/3 in the canopy projection and 1/3 collected between rows; and 5 sampling tools: Dutch auger; screw auger; probe; hoe and drill. Soil samples were collected at a depth of 0 to 0.2 m, and each composite sample was obtained by assembling and mixing 20 single samples. At each sampling point, an area of ​​2m 2 was delimited, in which simple samples were collected in all the evaluated places and with all the tools used. The following parameters were determined in the soil samples: pH in CaCl 2 ; potential acidity (H+Al); organic matter; P, extracted by Mehlich; K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ and base saturation. In a coffee-growing area, the fertilizer strip (canopy projection) has topsoil with higher acidity and lower contents of organic matter and nutrients P, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ than between rows. The tools used for soil sampling do not influence the results of soil chemical analysis in the coffee-growing area.

    Indaziflam application in newly transplanted arabica coffee seedlings

    Weed management is one of the main and most problematic cultural practices used in coffee plantations. Slow growth, broad spacing associated with scarce registered products for weed control at an early crop stage, are the main problems faced by producers. Therefore, it is desirable for new herbicide molecules to be registered for this crop, as is the recent case of indaziflam. This study aimed to know the influence of indaziflam on the morphological characteristics of coffee plants and to propose alternatives to reduce its effects on plants. Therefore, the effects of this herbicide on two arabica coffee cultivars were studied, as well as the association of this herbicide with protection of the seedling collar (PVC pipes and bovine manure). Controls on weeds, possible injury on seedlings and effects on the main morphological characteristics of coffee plants were evaluated. Although treatments with the use of indaziflam cause intoxication in the seedlings, a reduction in plant damage was observed over time, and the damage was insignificant. In general, it was observed that cultivar IBC 12 suffered minor injuries, but it is more sensitive to the presence of indaziflam, since it presented greater damage in the morphological variables. The use of manure with the PVC pipe can be an alternative to reduce the effects of this herbicide, as it reduced the effects of the product on the root system of this cultivar. It is concluded that the application of indaziflam causes mild symptoms in coffee plants independent of the planted cultivar. Indaziflam causes reduction in seedling morphology, and this effect is dependent on the cultivar used. The use of manure associated to the PVC pipe can be an alternative to reduce the effects of indaziflam, mainly in the root system of coffee plants.

    Association of indaziflam and oxyfluorfen in coffee pre-transplantation

    Weed management in the pre-transplantation of coffee plants is an essential condition for the future success of the crop. Currently, the producer has few options to perform chemical management at this stage. Therefore, one of the solutions that is being used is the tank mixing of products proven efficient with new products on the market, such as indaziflam. The objective of this study is to know the selectivity of indaziflam, associated or not with oxyfluorfen, in coffee pre-planting and its effectiveness in weed control. Thus, the following treatments were tested in the field: indaziflam (25 g ha -1 a.i.), indaziflam (50 g ha -1 a.i.), oxyfluorfen (960 g ha -1 a.i.), indaziflam (25 g ha -1 a.i.) + oxyfluorfen (960 g ha -1 a.i.), indaziflam (50 g ha -1 a.i.) + oxyfluorfen (960 g ha -1 a.i.), plus a weeded and a non-weeded control. All treatments caused low intoxication in the seedlings, but without impairing the development and morphological variables of the plants. The treatments were efficient in controlling the species Bidens pilosa L., Commelina benghalensis L., Urochloa decumbens, Emilia fosbergii and Melampodium perfoliatum until 68 days after application. At 104 days, it was observed that there was a reduction in the efficiency of the products. It is concluded that the associated use of indaziflam and oxyfluorfen does not cause intoxications capable of interfering with the development of coffee plants. The association of these herbicides or their isolated applications is efficient in the control of weeds in the pre-transplantation of coffee plants, and the choice of the best management strategy is dependent on the weed community present in each area.

    Selectivity of fluazifop-p-butyl in young coffee plants

    Weed control is fundamental in coffee cultivation due to their big interference, competing with the crop for water, light and nutrients. Among the control methods used, chemical control is highlighted, as a function of its high efficiency and low cost. However, due to application failures, herbicide drift phytotoxicity is common. Aiming at the search for selective active ingredients in coffee plants, the objective in this study was to evaluate the selectivity of the active ingredient Fluazifop- p-butyl on the young coffee plants, and its effects on plant morphology, anatomy and physiology. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, with ‘Topázio MG 1190’ coffee plants (Coffea arabica L.), cultivated in pots with a capacity of 11 L substrate. The statistical design was randomized block design (RBD), with four replications and four doses of the herbicide, making up 16 experimental plots. Each plot consisted of three plants. The treatments were: 0%; 50%; 100% and 200% of the recommended commercial dose of the herbicide Fluazifop-p-butyl. The evaluations were performed at 120 days after application of the treatments. Morphological, physiological and anatomical characteristics were evaluated. Regardless of the evaluated characteristic, there was no difference between the doses of the herbicide. There were no visual phytotoxicity symptoms in the young coffee plants that received the herbicide Fluazifop-p-butyl. The growth of the coffee plants and the physiological and anatomical characteristics were not altered due to the application of the herbicide Fluazifop-p-butyl.

    Morphoagronomic and sensory performance of coffee cultivars in initial stage of development in cerrado mineiro

    Quality, in a condition of typical cultivation of the Cerrado. The trial was carried out in the municipality of Monte Carmelo - MG, in randomized block design, with four replicates. Morphoagronomic characteristics were evaluated 15 months after the implantation of the crop. The productivity and, subsequently, the quality of the beans, were evaluated at 18 months. Statistical analyzes were performed using the Genes software. The data were submitted to analysis of variance. The F test was used to determine the significance of treatments. The means were grouped by the Scott-Knott test (1974) at 5% probability and the experimental precision was verified by the estimation of the experimental variation coefficient (CV) and the selective accuracy. The sensory attributes were evaluated in a radar diagram, called “Sensogram”. Genetic variability was observed among cultivars for the vegetative characters. The cultivars Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144 and MGS Aranãs stood out as more productive, with a high percentage of sieve 16 and above and low percentage of grain type mocha. All the cultivars stood out as special, with emphasis on the cultivar Bourbon Amarelo IAC J10 in the wet processing and Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144 in the natural processing.

    Agronomic techniques for mitigating the effects of water restriction on coffee crops

    Water restriction significantly affects coffee (Coffea arabica L.) production. The study of a few agronomic techniques that optimizes water use can generate technologies for mitigating the effects of climatic variations on coffee crops. The aim in this study was to indicate agronomic techniques that mitigate the effects of water restriction on coffee crops. For this end, we analyzed the morphophysiological changes in coffee plants cultivated in a greenhouse with different types of fertilizers and soil conditioners and under two levels of irrigation. The evaluations were performed 130 days after planting, assessing the morphological and physiological characteristics of the plants. We also quantified soil moisture in the different treatments. The water restriction expressively hindered plant growth. The use of controlled release fertilizers and soil conditioners, especially coffee husk, is indicated for mitigating water restriction in coffee crops.

    Big Coffee VL.: Seed desiccation tolerance, sieve classification, and physiological quality

    A coffee plant producing large fruit, seeds, and leaves in relation to conventional coffee plants, possibly generated by genetic mutation, was named Big Coffee VL. Seeds of this coffee plant were classified by size and used to establish the crop, whose progenies were designated as Big Coffee VL. large, Big Coffee VL. medium, and Big Coffee VL. small. The aim in this study was to investigate desiccation tolerance, together with size classification, and evaluate the physiological quality of the seeds of this progeny. Seeds of each type of Big Coffee VL. and of the cultivar Topázio were collected. High moisture seeds and seeds dried to 11% moisture content were evaluated to assess desiccation tolerance. Dried seeds of each Big Coffee VL. progeny and of the Topázio cultivar were classified by size in sieve testing using oblong screens for separation of peaberry seeds, and circular sieves from 22 to 12 for separation of flat seeds. All seeds were subjected to physiological evaluation through the germination test and determination of seedling dry matter. A completely randomized experimental design (CRD) was used; results were subjected to analysis of variance and means compared by the Scott-Knott test. Big Coffee VL. seeds tolerate desiccation to moisture content of 11% wet basis. Seeds of the Topázio cultivar have better physiological performance than seeds of the Big Coffee VL progenies. The bigger the seeds of Big Coffee VL., the better their physiological performance, exhibiting greater seedling dry matter.

    Sensory analysis of coffee dried with and without stirring

    The production of quality coffees, with different sensory characteristics, is strongly related to drying techniques. Experiments were carried out on coffee fruits, with the presence and absence of the fruit turnover process during drying, using Catuaí Vermelho 144 coffee fruits, from the Cerrado Mineiro, processed dry and wet. The treatments consisted of natural coffee, natural green coffee, pulped coffee and semi-washed coffee fruits. They were carried out in a completely randomized design, with 4 post-harvest processes, 2 types of drying (with or without Stirring) and 3 replicates, totaling 24 plots. Natural green coffee and natural coffees were more responsive in the final scores, when not stirred during the drying process, unlike the coffees obtained by wet processing. Peeled coffees obtained the highest scores for the attributes, regardless of the adoption or not of stirring during the drying process. It was possible to obtain scores above 80 points by the SCAA protocol, without stirring the coffee.
