    Differences in chemical characteristics due to different roasting of robusta coffee beans

    Roasting is a process that contributes to the formation of compounds and flavors in coffee beans. Temperature and length of time are the main factors in the roasting process. Generally, the range of temperatures and roasting times varies significantly for different varieties of coffee beans. This study aims to determine the effect of roasting on changes in the chemical characteristics of robusta coffee beans (Coffea canephora) from Sidomulyo Village. This study used different brewing methods to brew roasted robusta coffee beans with the best chemical characteristics used a factorial randomized block design with two factors: roasting temperature, which consisted of three levels (185, 190, and 195 ⁰C), and roasting time, which consisted of three levels (10, 13, and 16 minutes). The roasted coffee beans were analyzed for water content, ash content, caffeine content, total phenol, and pH. The results of this study obtained a water content value of 3.523 ± 0.129% to 1.939 ± 0.025%, ash content of 8.119 ± 0.115% to 4.315 ± 0.260%, a caffeine content of 2.494 ± 0.015% to 2.176 ± 0.021%; total phenol of 6.251 ± 0.101% to 4.334 ± 0.117%; and a pH value of 6.675±0.126 to 4.075±0.171. At this stage, the best treatment (Zeleny method) is produced by robusta coffee beans roasted at 185⁰C for 10 minutes. Robusta coffee beans with the best treatment have a moisture content of 3.523 ± 0.129%; ash content of 4.315 ± 0.260%, the caffeine content of 2.494±0.015%; total phenol of 6.251±0.101%; and a pH value of 4.075±0.171.

    Evaluation of a prototype of soil thermal solarizer for control of gall nematode in the production of coffee seedlings

    In coffee crops at Rondônia State of Brazil, there is an increase in phytonematode epidemics.Since most local coffe nurseries at Rondônia use soil as substrate for seedling production, this work aimed to test the minimum exposure time at 60 ºC to control of root-knot nematodes Meloidogyne incognita in soil by means of solar heating, using a solarizer, in an adapted version for better heating perfomance. The used solarizer prototype was built of a wooden box covered with metal sheets, thermal blankets, painted black, with aluminum pipes of 0.5 cm in diameter at the bottom of the box that circulates the water heated by the collector box. The soil was inoculated with a suspension of 1000 eggs + J2 of M. incognita per liter and placed in equipment with a capacity of 150 liters. Exposure times at a minimum temperature of 60 °C were evaluated, with 14 treatments: C1 (non-inoculated and not autoclaved), C2 (inoculated), C3 (non-inoculated and autoclaved) T0’, T15’, T30’, T45’, T60’, T180’, T360’, T720’, T1440’, T2880’ and T4320’ . The temperature was measured every 15 minutes using a skewer-type digital thermometer. The soil was removed according to the exposure time, and placed in 8-liter pots, in which clone 125 and BRS 2357 coffee seedlings, susceptible to M. incognita , were transplanted and growing in a greenhouse for 180 days. The experimental design used was DIC, with 6 replications, each seedling as na experimental unit. Reproduction factor (FR), number of eggs per plant (NOGR) and number of galls per gram of root (NGGR) were evaluated. The FR, NOGR and NGGR variables reduced with exposure time. All treatments showed an effect to control the population of M. incognita in infected soils, with 100% efficacy of pathogen eradication from the T45’ treatment, 60 minutes of exposure is recommended for the production of Coffea canephora seedlings. Taken together, thir work showed the high potential of thr solorizer to contribute in the root-knot nematode control to seedling production.

    Effect of flight operative height and genotypes on conilon coffee spraying using an unmanned aerial vehicle

    This study analyzed the effect of operational flight height and conilon coffee genotypes in the deposition and uniformity of destruction in the plant’s can-opy. The spray were conducted using a unmanned aerial vehicle in a conilon coffee plantation. The experiment was carried out with a randomized block design and treatments arranged in a factorial scheme, with three operational flight heights in relation to the coffee canopy and three genotypes of conilon coffee (Coffea canephora). The parameters evaluated were volume median diameter (VMD), density of drops and coverage (%). The interaction between flight height variables and canopy’s range was significant for the data on VMD variables, droplet density and coverage. According to the results, spray performance at an average height of 3.0 m is better than at 2.0 and 4.0 m. At 4.0 m, we observed a decrease in these variables, and this can be explained by a possible drift caused by the wind intensity and direction at higher heights. The coverage on the genotype A1 leaves was higher when compared to the other genotypes, although flight operational height was significantly different only in this genotype, 8.1% at 4.0 m, we observed at this height the lowest coverage values.

    Identifying Coffea genotypes tolerant to water deficit

    Approximately 26% of the coffee grown in Colombia is located in areas presenting water deficit, with some of these areas also presenting high solar brightness. This combination reduces coffee production, thus affecting the income of 31% of the country’s coffee-growing families. To identify accessions of the Colombian Coffee Collection (CCC) that are tolerant to water deficit, 65 genotypes were evaluated in screenhouse conditions at the National Coffee Research Center (Cenicafé), located in Manizales, Caldas, Colombia. Seedlings of each genotype were transplanted to polyethylene bags, each filled with 10 kg sandy loam Andisol soil. Two moisture treatments were applied as follows: (1) soil at field capacity (60% moisture) and (2) water deficit conditions, with soil at 50% field capacity (30% moisture). After five months, total dry biomass was determined, considered as the sum of the dry biomass of leaves, stems, and roots. The Student’s t test for independent samples was used to analyze resulting values at a level of significance of 5%. Reducing irrigation under water deficit conditions usually delays accession growth, which is reflected in decreased biomass. However, the total dry biomass of nine Ethiopian introductions of Coffea arabica (CCC238, CCC254, CCC284, CCC372, CCC474, CCC536, CCC537, CCC555, CCC1147), six diploid accessions (CCC1030, EA.20, EA.209, EA.227, EA.229, EA.287), and three interspecific hybrids of Caturra x Coffea canephora (25, 640, 702) in water deficit conditions did not differ sta-tistically from the total dry biomass obtained in treatments with irrigation at field capacity. Because these introductions present adaptation mechanisms to water deficit, they retain their leaves without reducing their leaf area or total dry biomass and should accordingly be considered as candidates for evaluation in dry regions to determine their tolerance to water deficit based on effects on production or biomass.

    Genetic variability of conilon coffee population from cultivar ‘ES8152’ based on morphoagronomic variables

    This study aimed to analyze the genetic variability of Coffea canephora population with 190 genotypes from cultivar ‘ES8152’, based on morphoagronomic characteristics and vegetation index, to identify the most important characteristics for genetic divergence and compare them with commercial clones. The experiment was installed, in 2019, at the Bananal do Norte Experimental Farm/INCAPER, Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, ES, Brazil. The experiment was carried out in Federer’s augmented block design with three blocks, four common treatments (commercial clones A1, LB1, V8 and V12) and 190 regular treatments, genotypes from the seed production field of the conilon coffee cultivar ‘ES8152’. At 24 months of age 14 morphoagronomic characteristics and vegetation index were evaluated. Descriptive analysis of the data, the estimation of the Standardized Euclidean Distance (ED) followed by the group-ing by the methods of Tocher, UPGMA and principal coordinates, in addition to the relative importance of the characters estimated by the Singh meth-odology were performed. The most distant genotypes were 62 and 83 (ED=2.620) and the closest were 42 and 160 (ED=0.208). Genotype 83 stood out as the most distant among the others. The optimization and hierarchical groupings allowed the identification of genotypes 15, 81, 107 and 184 as similar to commercial clones. The discard analysis of variables recommended the elimination of the vegetation index and average internode length of the next diversity analysis. Principal coordinate analysis found phenotypic similarity of the genotypes 30, 81, 115, 141 and 163 with the clone V12, of the genotype 119 with the clone A1 and genotype 17 with clone LB1. The study, of morphoagronomic characters, allowed to detection the genetic diversity existing in the materials evaluated, indicating those with phenotypic similarity with the commercial clones, being possible the early identification of promising genotypes, agronomically superior, to start a breeding program for clonal selection, recurrent selection and controlled crosses to maximize heterosis.

    Planococcus spp.: behavior and monitoring in conilon coffee crops

    The damage caused by the citrus mealybug attack, Planococcus spp., on Coffea canephora crops is becoming more and more frequent, and may cause losses close to 100%. Knowledge of aspects related to pest behavior and adoption of methods to monitor crop incidence are important tools for integrated pest management. Thus, the objective was to study the behavior of citrus mealybug along the phenological stages of C. canephora and to propose methods to monitor its occurrence in the crops. The study was carried out in an area consisting of adult C. canephora plants of the variety Diamante ES 8112. The study was carried out using four sampling methods: 1) soil and root sampling with a probe; 2) opening small trenches; 3) plagiotropic branches and 4) weed sampling. Evaluations were carried out monthly by checking and confirming the presence of citrus mealybug in the sampled regions. The information obtained was used to describe the behavior of citrus mealybug and to analyze the applicability of the monitoring methods studied. In the absence of the reproductive phase, citrus mealybug lodges in the root system of coffee and weeds, in the region close to the colon, moving to the aerial part of the plants (rosettes) at the beginning of the flowering of the crop. Probe sampling was not efficient, while opening small trenches is a difficult procedure and causes damage to the root system of the coffee tree. The sampling of plagiotropic branches and weeds allows the monitoring of citrus mealybug duringall the phenological phases of C. canephora.

    Implications of the cut type and apex length of stem cuttings used for the production of plantlets of Conilon coffee

    Producing plantlets of Conilon coffee within the specific recommendations and with a high level of quality is fundamental since it is capable of promoting the initial development of the crops. To identify the best protocol to prepare the stem cuttings is fundamental to the process of plantlet production of the species. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the implications of the type of apex cutting and the length of the remaining apex of stem cuttings to produce plantlets of Conilon coffee (Coffea canephora). To this end, two trials were conducted in the Marilândia Experimental Farm (Instituto Capixaba de Pesquisa, Assistência Técnica e Extensão Rural, Marilândia-ES). The first trial evaluated the types of apex cutting (straight or bevel cut), and the second trial studied the different lengths of the remaining apex (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 cm). Characteristics of the vegetative growth and photosynthetic traits of the plantlets of Conilon coffee were evaluated after 120 days of cultivation in a nursery. The biomass accumulation of the plantlets of Conilon coffee produced by stem cutting may be favored by the use of bevel cut on the apex. The length of the remaining apex does not seem to have a expressive effect over the quality or growth of the plantlets, being only possible to observe effects for leaf area and biomass accumulation.

    Evaluation of Conilon coffee productivity intercropped with Ambarella (Spondias dulcis Parkinson)

    The State of Espirito Santo (Brazil) has 9.4 % of its area cultivated in full sun, monocrop coffee. Coffee has a great importance for the State and a dependence on just one product can make farmers vulnerable to price fluctuations. Integrating coffee (Coffea canephora Pierre ex Froehner) intercropped with Ambarella (Spondias dulcis Parkinson) offers environmental benefits and an extra financial combination through the commercialization of Ambarella fruits. The goal of this study was to verify the effects of the distance and orientation (East-West versus North-South) between Ambarella on coffee crop yield. We assessed two different coffee crops spaced (3 x 1.5) m. Both were intercropped with Ambarella spaced (15 x 7.5) m. The average coffee productivity varied from (2,177 to 7,346) kg plant-1. The lowest productivity was measured in the North-South orientation, during 2016, and the highest in the East-West orientation during 2017. Our findings also indicate that regardless of planting distance, Ambarella did not significantly affected coffee productivity demonstrating that it can be a promising fruit tree to intercrop with Conilon coffee.

    Impact of drying methods over the germinative potenti al of conilon coffee of late maturation

    This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different drying methods (regarding temperature and drying time) over the seed moisture and germination of seeds of Coffea canephora, harvested from genotypes of late maturation. For this end, seeds from selected genotypes were harvested and dried using two different methods: drying at 25 ˚C with natural circulation of air and drying at 35 ˚C with artificial circulation of air. The seeds were evaluated to quantify the loss of moisture content, and their germinative potential was assessed by parameters of germination speed, and the proportion of seedlings with healthy germination originated from them. The results show it is possible to apply different drying methods; using different systems, temperatures and times of exposure; to decrease the moisture content of seeds of C. canephora, from 50% (freshly harvested seeds from genotypes of late maturation, in July) to under 18% (dried seeds). Even if the initial stages of the drying process, while the seeds still present high moisture content, are similar for both methods, the method with artificial circulation of air at 35 ˚C promotes the drying speed and is able to achieve the lower levels of seed moisture using less than half of the time required by method with natural circulation of air at 25 ˚C. This faster moisture removal, however, has negative impacts over the germinative potential of the seeds, which are not observed for seeds subjected to the slow natural drying.

    Microclimatic characterization of conilon coffee cultivate dinnorth-south alignment in northen Espírito Santo state, Brazil

    The objective in this work was to study the influence of the North-South plantation alignment with respect to microclimatic, growth, and mineral nutrition conditions in order to quantify the variables and to point out possible consequences for the coffee tree. The experiment was carried out in a 6-year-old conilon coffee (Coffea canephora) crop with a mean height of 1.6 m, cultivated in full sun and spaced 3.5 m x 1.0 m. The data were collected on four dates from December 2016 to September 2017 in North Espírito Santo State, Brazil. The irradiance, air temperature, and vapor pressure deficit variables were quantified by means of external data loggers. The leaf temperature was determined by means of thermal images, and the plant growth and nutrient concentration in the leaves on both sides of the plant (East and West) were evaluated. The West side of the plant showed higher values of irradiance, temperature, and vapor pressure deficit in the afternoon, reaching a difference of 5°C between the two sides. The leaf temperature had similar behavior to air temperature, reaching a difference of approximately 12°C between the two sides in the afternoon. Although significant differences were observed for some nutrients between the sides of the plant, macro and micronutrient leaf contents remained within the range considered adequate for the coffee tree.
