(Crop Breeding and Applied Biotechnology, 2016-03) Guerreiro Filho, Oliveiro; Mendonça, Alex Paulo; Nonato, Juliana Vieira Almeida; Andrade, Vinícius Teixeira; Fatobene, Bárbhara Joana dos Reis; Braghini, Masako Toma; Prela-Pantano, Angelica
Brazilian arabica coffee production is based on a set of highly productive cultivars sexually propagated. All of them are susceptible to coffee leaf miner, Leucoptera coffeella, and most of them are also susceptible to coffee leaf rust, Hemileia vastatrix. Aiming to reduce the selection process of cultivars with multiple resistances to both biotic constraints, the Coffea arabica clones 760, 1059, 1064 and 1215 were evaluated under field conditions. The mean yield of four C. arabica clones was not statistically different from the experimental controls; however, the yield of clone 1059 was 21% higher than the control cultivar Obatã IAC 1669-20. Leaf miner resistance level in all the evaluated clones remained the same as the mother plant’s. However, the same did not occur for resistance to H. vastatrix, due to the emergence of new pathogen races. In summary, it is potentially feasible the adoption of clone 1059 as a new clonal cultivar resistant to coffee leaf miner.

(Universidade Federal de Viçosa, 2022-10-17) Lago, William Oliveira do; Sabino, Paulo Henrique de Siqueira; Ramirio, Lucas Deleon; Venâncio, Helaine Barros de Oliveira
The coffee leaf miner is responsible for significant decreases in coffee production. To mitigate the problems caused by this pest control strategies need to be applied. The combined application of chemical and biological insecticides is an alternative that can reduce the population of leaf miner in areas with high infestation and occurrence of resistant individuals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the combined application of Isaria fumosorosea and beta-cyfluthrin in the control of coffee leaf miner. A randomized block design was used, in a 4 x 2 factorial scheme, with four treatments: I. fumosorosea, beta-cyfluthrin, I fumosorosea + beta-cyfluthrin and control, besides two application levels, one and two applications. There was no significant effect on the interaction between treatments. The number of applications did not increase the control percentage of the leaf miner. However, the treatments I. fumosorosea, beta-cyfluthrin, I fumosorosea + beta-cyfluthrin showed a higher control percentage of the leaf miner, compared to the control treatment with both one and two applications. I. fumosorosea, beta-cyfluthrin, and the combination of I fumosorosea + beta-cyfluthrin are effective in controlling the leaf miner.

Age and time related pheromone production in coffee leafminer Leucoptera coffeella Guérin-Méneville (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae)
(Sociedade Brasileira de Química, 2008) Lima, Eraldo R.; Vilea, Evaldo F.; Lucia, Terezinha M. C. Della; Ataíde, Lívia M. S.
This study was undertaken to access the pattern of sex pheromone production in glands of virgin females of Leucoptera coffeella as an indirect measure of the calling behavior. The major compound, 5,9-dimethylpentadecane (1) was extracted from pheromone glands of virgin females to be used in two experiments. The first one investigated the effect of the pheromone production time by females (extracts of 10 females with age of two days were carried out at 2-hour intervals). The other experiment evaluated the effect of female age on pheromone production (10 females with age ranged from 1 to 5 days after emergence class were used). Hexane extracts were made with 5 ng µL-1 of 5,9-dimethylheptadecane (2) as internal standard and analyzed by GC. Females had the highest amount of pheromone at the last four hours in the dark and the two first hours in the light period. One-day old females produced the highest amount of pheromone in the glands.

(Universidade Federal de Viçosa, 2020) Zampiroli, Renan; Alvarenga, Cleyton Batista de; Rinaldi, Paula Cristina Natalino; Andaló, Vanessa; Prado, Jair Rocha do; Gonçalves, Pablo Arthur Silva
Coffee production faces challenges due to the susceptibility of the crop to insects. Owing to the coffee leaf miner Leucoptera coffeella, which is one of the main insect pests, the technology for the application of phytosanitary measures becomes the main challenge for coffee growers. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of coffee leaf miner control using different methods of application. The study was conducted in an experimental site in the municipality of Monte Carmelo – Minas Gerais. Spray depositions in different positions of the plant canopy and the effective control of coffee leaf miner were evaluated using the following application treatments: a hydropneumatic sprayer with varying spray volumes (200 and 400 L ha-1), two hollow-cone spray nozzles with the presence and absence of agricultural adjuvant, and electrostatic application using a spray volume of 200 L ha-1 with and without spray adjuvant. The addition of an adjuvant to the spray did not influence coffee leaf miner control; in contrast, a spray volume of 200 L ha-1 combined with the application of coarse droplets was efficient in the management of insect pest. The reduction in the rate of the application using coarse droplets increased the operational capacity and reduced spray drift potential.

(Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia (UFRA), 2017) Zampiroli, Renan; Alvarenga, Cleyton Batista de; Andaló, Vanessa; Rinaldi, Paula Cristina; Assis, Gleice Aparecida de
Leaf miner is a major coffee tree pest that causes severe losses. Most farmers perform chemical control in an attempt to reduce damage to the crop. Thus, the current study aims to analyze spraying efficiency and control effectiveness according to the management plan adopted in a coffee farm in the Cerrado of Minas Gerais. The application used Arbus sprayer, model 2,000, at the pressure of 600 kPa. The droplet spectrum was analyzed using water-sensitive paper. The plant architecture influence on the application quality was evaluated through the droplet spectrum and control efficacy. We conclude that the plant crown height and depth affected application efficiency. Spraying was an effective phytosanitary control of coffee leaf miner, reaching 87.5% control efficiency ratio, considering that infestation was three times higher than that recommended for the applied pesticide at the time of application.

(Editora UFLA, 2020) Melo, Thiago Lima; Raetano, Carlos Gilberto; Cardoso, Adriana Dias; Moreira, Aldenise Alves; Leite, Suzany Aguiar; Castellani, Maria Aparecida
Leaf miner is a key coffee crop pest in Central and South America countries, especially in Brazil, where the insect causes considerable production losses. In the management of this insect pest, insecticide applications at reduced rates are fundamental for improve the operational capacity of the sprayer and the rational use of water. Thus, the aim of this study was to select a application rate that ensures effectiveness of cyantraniliprole, cartape hydrochloride and beta-cypermethrin insecticides in the leaf miner control, good spraying quality with varying application rates and low impact on natural parasitism. The qualitative and quantitative aspects of spraying with the Brilliant Blue marker were evaluated at the following rates: 28.1, 60.5, 80.2 and 180.0 L ha-1 and the efficacy of cyantraniliprole, cartape hydrochloride and beta-cypermethrin insecticides, with doses of the commercial formulations. Pest infestation and parasitism were determined before and after applications. Application rate interferes with qualitative aspects and spray deposition levels. Considering the quality-quantitative aspects and Agronomic Efficacy, rates between 80.2 and 180.0 L ha-1 are the most suitable for the control of this insect. Cyantraniliprole insecticide is effective in controlling L. coffeella up to 45 DAA at rate of 180.0 L ha-1. The impact of cyantraniliprole, cartape hydrochloride and beta-cypermethrin insecticides on L. coffeella natural parasitism varies with application rates and time after application.

(Editora UFLA, 2019-04) Melo, Thiago Lima; Raetano, Carlos Gilberto; Nery, Moizés Silva; Cardoso, Adriana Dias; Moreira, Aldenise Alves; Leite, Suzany Aguiar; Jesus, Thamires Francisca de; Silva, Wesley Gil Oliveira; Castellani, Maria Aparecida
The leaf miner is a key pest of coffee and the use of insecticides for its control results in high water consumption. The objective in this study was to evaluate the quali-quantitative aspects of reduced spray volumes with and without the addition of adjuvant, the efficacy of the insecticide cartap hydrochloride in the control of the pest and its effects on the parasitism. Two experiments were carried out in coffee plantations in São Desiderio, BA. Initially, solution of Brilliant Blue tracer (0.15% p v -1 ) of the 43, 112, 146 and 309 L ha -1 volumes was sprayed with and without the soybean oil methyl ester adjuvant (0.25 % v v -1 ). Before spraying, water-sensitive cards were fixed to the plants and subsequently used for analyze the droplet spectrum in Gotas 1.0 software. The tracer deposit was determined by spectrophotometry. Posteriorly, the insecticide cartap hydrochloride (0.5 kg a.i. ha -1 ) was applied in the same volumes and types of spray used in the first test. Infestation rates of pest and parasitism were evaluated before and after application of the insecticide. The quali-quantitative aspects of the sprays were affected by the volume of spray applied, by the adjuvant and by the interaction of the factors. The intermediate volumes yielded better spraying quality without the presence of the adjuvante, with higher number and desity of drops. The spraying volume affected the depoisto the Brilliant Blue tracer in a linear and positive form. The efficacy of the insecticide was prolonged with the lowest volume spray and with adjuvant and its impact on parasitism varied with the volume applied and time after application.

Leaf miner incidence in coffee plants under different drip irrigation regimes and planting densities
(Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária - Embrapa, 2012-02) Assis, Gleice Aparecida; Assis, Franscinely Aparecida; Scalco, Myriane Stella; Parolin, Francisco José Toloza; Fidelis, Iraci; Moraes, Jair Campos; Guimarães, Rubens José
The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of different drip irrigation regimes and planting densities on the incidence of the leaf miner, Leucoptera coffeella, in arabica coffee plants for one year. The experiment was carried out in 2008, in a complete randomized block design, in a split‐plot in time arrangement, with four replicates. The treatments consisted of four drip irrigation regimes – soil water balance, irrigations at 20 and 60 kPa soil tensions, and a nonirrigated treatment –, which were distributed at three plant densities: 2,500, 5,000, and 10,000 plants per hectare. The evaluations were made on a monthly basis between January and December 2008. The highest pest occurrence period was from August to November, a season with low‐air relative humidity preceded by a drought period. Irrigated coffee plants showed an incidence of intact mines 2.2 times lower than that of nonirrigated plants. Irrigation and increasing of plant density contribute to the reduction of coffee leaf miner occurrence.
