    Selection of Conilon coffee clones for the Zona da Mata region of Minas Gerais, Brazil

    Recently, the cultivation of Coffea canephora species has expanded as a consequence of climate change effects and emerging markets that use this cof-fee as raw material. To meet such demands of production, it is necessary to also improve yield in cultivated areas. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate Conilon coffee clones to identify the most promising fitting material for the Zona da Mata region of Minas Gerais, as well as to analyze the effect of the genotype x biennium interaction and estimate correlation coefficients among evaluated characteristics. Vegetative vigor, yield, main pests and diseases were evaluated in 36 clones from Incaper, ES. The statistical analyses considered the averages of each biennium: Biennium 1 (B1) - 2005/2006; Biennium 2 (B2) - 2007/2008; Biennium 3 (B3) - 2009/2010, and also the average of three biennia (A3B). Univariate and joint statistical analysis were performed, as well as estimates of phenotypic, genotypic and environmental correlation coefficients among assessed characteristics. A wide variability among clones was observed for most of the evaluated characteristics for both each biennium and the average of three biennia. The severities of most diseases have reduced over the years of cultivation. The genotypic correlation coefficients have overcome phenotypic and environmental ones. In general, pests and diseases severities showed significant and negative correlations with vegetative vigor and yield. On the other hand, the last two characteristics were posi-tively correlated. It was also evidenced a certain diversity among clones for most of the evaluated traits. Clone x biennium interaction was significant only for yield and leaf rust severity. There are negative correlations among the characteristics associated with yield and pests and diseases occurrences, which make it possible the use of yield variable as a selection parameter. Clones 24, 23, 28, 26, 21, 29 and 06 MG/ES present a higher potential for cultivation in the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais.

    Decomposition and nitrogen mineralization from green manures intercropped with coffee tree

    The knowledge about the rate of decomposition and nitrogen mineralization of green manures provides synchronization with the higher absorption stage by the coffee tree. The rate of decomposition and nitrogen mineralization varies according to the species of green manure and with the environmental factors. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the decomposition and nitrogen mineralization of two green manures intercropped with coffee trees for three different periods. The experiment was divided into two designs for statistical analysis, one referring to the characterization of plant material (fresh mass, dry matter, dry matter content, nitrogen concentration and accumulation in the jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis) and hyacinth bean (Dolichos lablab) and another to evaluate the rate of decomposition and N mineralization of these species. The decomposition rate decreased in both species as their growth time increased in the field. The decomposition was influenced by the phenology of green manures. Nitrogen mineralization of the jack bean decreased as the growth period in the field increased and was faster than hyacinth bean only when cut at 60 days. The N mineralization was slower than mass decomposition in both species.

    Intercropping period between species of green manures and organically-fertilized coffee plantation

    The adequate supply of nitrogen to coffee plantation is one of the main challenges of organic agriculture. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of organic fertilization with two legume species in different intercropping periods on nitrogen nutrition, initial growth and productivity of coffee plantation. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, in 2x4 split-plot factorial design, being that the plot consisted of two intercrops (coffee+jack bean and coffee+hyacinth bean) and the four intercropping periods (30, 60, 90 and 120 days after sowing of the legume), and the subplot by 50% and 100% of fertilization for the coffee plantation. The increase in the intercropping period between legumes and coffee plantation favored a greater increase in height and node number of coffee trees, besides showing higher heights when fertilized with 50% of the recommended dose and intercropped with hyacinth bean. The intercropping with the hyacinth bean resulted in a larger crown diameter of coffee trees in 2010 and a larger diameter accumulated in the two evaluated years. Higher N contents were found in coffee trees fertilized with 100% of the recommended dose. The legumes supplied the nutritional requirements of the coffee harvest fertilized with 50% of the dose. The bean yield of the processed coffee is not affected by the intercropping with the green manures of jack bean or hyacinth bean.

    Resíduo de brachiaria fertilizada com nitrogênio na adubação do cafeeiro

    O uso de resíduos vegetais no cultivo do cafeeiro pode minimizar as perdas e favorecer o uso eficiente do nitrogênio. Objetivou-se, neste trabalho, avaliar como o modo de aplicação do nitrogênio, se na forrageira, no cafeeiro ou em ambos, afeta o crescimento do cafeeiro. Mudas de Coffea arabica foram plantadas em vasos de 25 L e cultivadas em casa de vegetação. O nitrogênio foi aplicado na forma de sulfato de amônio, ora diretamente no cafeeiro, ora na planta forrageira (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu), a qual foi cultivada em parcelas de 10 m 2 , sem N; e com 150 e 300 kg ha -1 de N, realizada aproximadamente 45 dias antes do corte da forrageira. Após o corte, 500 g de material vegetal fresco foram acondicionados em recipientes de nylon e colocados sobre os vasos. Amostras da braquiária foram colhidas para determinação da concentração de N-total e da relação C/N; bem como da concentração de N-total, no tecido foliar do cafeeiro. Em cada parcelamento de N e corte, avaliou-se a taxa de crescimento em diâmetro do caule e altura da planta. No final do experimente, avaliou-se a produção de massa seca, número de folhas e área foliar do cafeeiro; e, a biomassa restante da braquiária em degradação. O estado nutricional do cafeeiro não foi prejudicado, quando o nutriente foi fornecido via massa seca da forrageira, fertilizada com nitrogênio. A adição de resíduo da forrageira, sem adubação nitrogenada, favoreceu a imobilização do N do solo e reduziu a concentração de N-foliar do cafeeiro

    Crescimento de cultivares de café em resposta a doses contrastantes de zinco

    O fornecimento de zinco interfere no crescimento, desenvolvimento e produtividade do cafeeiro e as cultivares de café diferem em suas respostas à disponibilidade do nutriente no solo. Objetivou-se, neste trabalho,identificar a tolerância diferencial de cultivares de Coffea arabica à deficiência de zinco, verificar como se dá a partição do nutriente nos órgãos da planta sob baixo e alto suprimento e discriminar que características de crescimento passíveis de serem avaliadas precocemente se correlacionam à tolerância ao baixo suprimento do nutriente. Mudas de 11 cultivares de cafeeiro foram cultivadas por oito meses em solução nutritiva nas concentrações de 0,0 e 6,0 μmol L -1 de Zn. Determinaram-se diâmetro do caule, altura de planta, número de ramos plagiotrópicos, volume de raiz, número de folhas, área foliar e produção de massa seca. Conclui-se que há variabilidade de resposta de cultivares de cafeeiro ao suprimento de zinco, sendo as cultivares San Ramon, IPR-102 e Rubi, dentre as estudadas, as mais tolerantes à restrição no seu fornecimento e a cultivar São Bernardo a menos tolerante à baixas doses de Zn. Em condições de suprimento adequado ou elevado de zinco esse se acumula em raízes e caules, que podem servir como órgãos de reserva do nutriente, enquanto que em condições de deficiência há maiores concentrações em folhas apicais. A produção de massa total é a característica de maior importância relativa na discriminação das cultivares quanto à resposta ao suprimento do nutriente.

    Coffee tree (Coffea arabica L.) response to limestone en soil with high aliminum saturation

    Although Coffea arabica L. is not particularly sensitive to Al toxicity, the species presents different tolerance among varieties. The varieties previously classified as sensitive, Catimor (232T15-PN- UFV 3880), moderately tolerant, Catuaí 99 (IAC 99) and Catuaí Vermelho (IAC 15), and tolerant, Icatu (IAC 4045), were evaluated under field conditions. They were subjected to four limestone levels: 0.0; 0.5; 1.0; and 1.5 times the limestone requirement (LR) calculated by the base saturation method, considering 70% as the saturation reference value. The shoot and root growth were evaluated after 23 and 34 months, respectively, and the concentrations of Ca, Mn, Zn and Cu in the leaf tissues after 34 months. The shoot development of the variety UFV 3880 was not affected by liming levels. For roots development, limestone doses from ranging 0.74 to 0.84 LR, provided the largest concentrations of Ca in the foliar tissues. IAC 99 presented the best shoot development with limestone doses from 0.25 to 0.54 LR, and the best root development with doses from 0.33 to 0.40 LR. IAC 15 had a linear increase of root length and root specific surface with the increase of the limestone doses, which caused root thinning and elongation. This suggests that this variety is more sensitive to soil Al saturation than the other tested varieties. The IAC 4045 presented the best shoot and root development with liming ranging from 1.06 to 1.14 LR. It seems that other soil constraints, such as Mn content, impaired this variety development in lower limestone doses. Aluminum soil saturation up to 30 % in the superficial soil layer did not interfere in the development of the roots and shoots of the tested varieties.
