Temporal progress of coffee leaf rust and environmental conditions affecting severity in Veracruz State, Mexico
(Universidade Federal de Lavras, 2023-03-28) Pale-Ezquivel, Ivan; Lagunes, Ricardo Musule; Pineda-López, Maria del Rosario; Alarcón-Gutiérrez, Enrique; Sánchez-Velásquez, Lázaro Rafael
Coffee is an important crop in Mexico. Unfortunately, coffee production has been affected by coffee leaf rust (CLR). For Veracruz, the second state in Mexico with the major production of coffee, there are available reports of weekly CLR severity, but these are only informative without in-depth inferential analysis. We analyzed variations of CLR severity along the year in Veracruz with data from municipal weekly reports provided by Mexico’s federal government phytosanitary epidemiological monitoring coffee program. We selected reports dated in 2018 from nine municipalities and after calculations of mean monthly severity values, we conducted a one-way ANOVA (months as factors) of severity data. We compared this information with other coffee-producing regions. Additionally, we explored the association of temperature, rainfall, and altitude with CLR severity using Principal Component Analysis and multiple linear regressions. Temperature and rainfall data were obtained from Mexican National Meteorological Service. We found that CLR severity in October, November, December, and January (months of harvest period) was significantly higher than values from March-June. During the harvest period, coffee plants allocate resources mainly for fruiting which competes in resources for other tasks such as defense and leaf growth, so this competition of resources can explain the positive relationship found between fruit load and CLR severity. This monthly variation of severity was similar to those reported in Chiapas, Guatemala, Colombia, Uganda, and Ethiopia. Our model (R2 = 0.948) showed a significant and negative effect of minimum and maximum temperature (in a range from 9.9 – 15.5 °C and 18.5 – 26.5 °C, respectively) on CLR severity, while the effect of rainfall (in a range from 32.0 – 359.9 mm) and médium temperature (from 14.3 – 20.5 °C) was positive. With our study, we suggest applications of fungicides in March-June when coffee plantations are in leaf phenophase.

Management of coffee leaf rust using L-glutamic acid biofertilizer combined with fungicide
(Universidade Federal de Lavras, 2022-12-28) Cabral, Samanta Aparecida Cristiano; Mafra, Natália Moreira; Carvalho, Beatriz Fagundes de; Rezende, Dalilla Carvalho
The use of biofertilizers is a potential tool for the management of crop diseases. Coffee leaf rust, which is commonly controlled by triazole and strobilurin fungicides, is one of the main phytosanitary challenges associated with coffee cultivation. However, the indiscriminate use of such fungicides may be harmful to the environment and human health, in addition to having a negative impact on coffee exports. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of foliar application of L-glutamic acid on the incidence and severity of coffee leaf rust in the southern region of Minas Gerais, Brazil. A biofertilizer made of sugarcane molasses fermented by the bacterium Corynebacterium glutamicumwas used in combination with 25% L-glutamic acid and a fungicide of the triazole group registered for crops. The experimental design adopted was randomized blocks with four replications (eight plants per replicate) and seven treatments: fungicides, control test, 0.8 L ha-1 of biofertilizer, combinations of 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, and 0.1 L ha-1 of biofertilizer and fungicide.Three treatments were initially applied in a preventive way, before the rainy season, and then at intervals of 60 days. After seven months of treatment, we observed that coffee leaf rust incidence was significantly lower in coffee plants treated with combined products when compared to treatments of either fungicide or biofertilizer only, with a reduction of 56% and 45%, respectively, being observed. Among the combinations of biofertilizer and fungicide, coffee leaf rust incidence reduced with an increase in the biofertilizer dose, such thatthe disease incidence in plants treated with a dose of 0.1 L ha-1was 58% lower than that in plants treated with fungicide only. No differences in disease severity were observed among the treatments. In conclusion, the use of a combination of biofertilizer and fungicide is more effective for the management of coffee leaf rust than the use of the isolated products.

(Editora UFLA, 2021) Viana, Mariana Thereza Rodrigues; Azevedo, Harianna Paula Alves de; Pereira, Fernanda Aparecida Castro; Carvalho, Milene Alves de Figueiredo; Guimarães, Rubens José
The identification of morphophysiological traits responsible for a better plant behavior when infected is useful for cultivar selection, and become crucial for breeding. We investigated the morphophysiological behavior of coffee genotypes before and after inoculation with the pathogen Hemileia vastatrix, causal agent of coffee rust. With multivariate techniques we identified the characteristics that most contribute to total genetic divergence of the geno types. Ten genotypes of Coffea arabica from the Germplasm Bank of Coffee from Minas Gerais were sown in a nursery and then take to a greenhouse with controlled temperature and humidity. After one month of acclimatization, the artificial inoculation with the fungus H. vastatrix was carried out. The anatomical and physiological evaluations were performed 1 day before inoculation and 160 days after inoculation. When the first symptom emerged, plants were evaluated according to a descriptive scale for coffee rust. We observed significant differences in rust severity and ostiole opening between genotypes. Different groups were formed by the K-means method, based on morphophysiological characteristics. This shows that genetic variability exists between the coffee genotypes evaluated before and after inoculation with the pathogen. The most important characteristics that contributed to the total genetic divergence were xylem vessel diameter and stomatal conductance. In conclusion, inoculation with H. vastatrix caused a change in coffee geno types based on morphophysiological characteristics.

(Editora UFLA, 2019-04) Dias, Rafael Almeida; Ribeiro, Marcelo Resende; Carvalho, Alex Mendonça de; Botelho, Cesar Elias; Mendes, Antonio Nazareno Guimarães; Ferreira, André Dominghetti; Fernandes, Fernando Costa
The objective of this study was to select coffee progenies with better assessment that can result in coffee rust resistant cultivars and better agronomic characteristics than the traditional ones. The essay was performed at the EPAMIG experimental field in Patrocínio, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Twenty-five progenies in the F 3 generation were studied. The experiment was set in a randomized complete block design with three replicates and ten plants per plot, arranged in rows at 3.5x0.7m. Productivity assessment, fruit production, in liters of “farm coffee” per plot, bean rating in a sieve (16 or above), and plant vigor were accessed in three different harvest seasons (2011/2012 harvest to 2014/2015 harvest), and coffee rust incidence and severity were then evaluated for 2016. The production profit estimation through the selection was also assessed, by the gain of direct selection for each characteristic, when compared to the rank addition. Progenies 13 (Icatu V. IAC 4040 x IAC 5002) and 3 (Icatu A. IAC 2944 x IAC 5002) were promising in generation advance, for being among the five most productive progenies. The selection gain reached by direct selection was superior than the gain of the total rank additions.

Selection of coffee progenies with large beans resistant to rust and cercospora leaf spot
(Editora UFLA, 2019-01) Pereira, Fernanda Aparecida Castro; Carvalho, Samuel Pereira de; Viana, Mariana Thereza Rodrigues; Vidal, Douglas Alves; Ferreira, Guilherme Souza; Silva, Joyce Alves Goulart da; Sâmia, Michelly Pereira
Rust is the main disease of coffee. Recently, cercospora leaf spot has grown in importance, intensifying defoliation and decreasing grain yield in Coffea arabica. The Big Coffee VL is a variety of C. arabica, with large beans. There is still little information on this variety. Because of this, the aim of this study was to use a mixed model approach to select the best progenies of “Big Coffee VL” for resistance to rust and cercospora leaf spot. There were evaluated 12 progenies with high bean yields. Based on bean size, leaves and plant size, plants within each progeny were classified as “small” (P), “medium” (M) and “large” (G). The experimental design was in blocks completely randomized, with six replicates and one plant per plot. Six measurements were carried out every 15 days for each plant by selecting 20 fully exposed leaves with higher and lower sun exposures. The measurements summarized disease severity using two diagrammatic scales to obtain the area of the leaf under rust or Cercospora leaf spot. A mixed model approach was used to calculate genotypic value (GV) and heritability estimates. The Mulamba and Mock index was used to select the most resistant progenies, in which the sum of rankings was weighted by a heritability value. Five progenies were selected; three progenies were G (G17, G9, and G12), one progeny was M (M5) and another progeny P (P23). Among these, M5 and P23 progenies are the most productive and may have potential use in future studies. This work presents the potential in investigating the new C. arabica variety.

Interaction of K and B in the intensity of coffee rust in nutrient solution
(Editora UFLA, 2018-04) Vasco, Gabriel Brandão; Pozza, Edson Ampélio; Silva, Marília Goulart da; Pozza, Adélia Aziz Alexandre; Chaves, Eugênio
This study aimed at assessing the interaction of potassium (K) and boron (B) in the coffee rust intensity in a nutrient solution. The experiment which was performed in a greenhouse was set up in the randomized complete block design (DBC) with four replicates. The experimental unit involved a single vase with two Catuaí Vermelho (IAC 144) cultivars. The treatments included five doses of boron (0.05, 0.50, 1, 2 and 4 mg L-1 ) and five of potassium (4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0 mmol L-1 ), totaling to 25 treatments in a factorial variance analysis. All the coffee seedling leaves were inoculated with Hemileia vastatrix. For the next 24 hours, the vases were covered with a black plastic bag, and left in the greenhouse to ensure favorable conditions for the fungal infection. A significant interaction was observed between the potassium (K) and boron (B) nutrients in coffee rust intensity. As the boron dose increased from 0.05 to 2.0 mg L-1 , the coffee rust intensity was observed to rise. From the 0.50 mg L-1 dose of B a drastic drop in the dry plant mass was observed, which reached zero index at the highest boron dose due to phytotoxicity.

Characterization of coffee cultivars leaf rust-resistant subjected to framework pruning
(Editora UFLA, 2018-01) Reis, Estevam Antônio Chagas; Freitas, Tainah; Carvalho, Milene Alves de Figueiredo; Mendes, Antônio Nazareno Guimarães; Rezende, Tiago Teruel; Carvalho, João Paulo Felicori
The goal of our work was to evaluate physiological and agronomic traits, as well as the relationship between these traits in coffee cultivars coming from a germplasm supposedly resistant to leaf rust, and their response to framework pruning. The experiment was conducted at the Federal University of Lavras in randomized blocks with three replicates, with spacing of 3.5 x 0.7 m and plots of 12 plants. An amount of 25 coffee cultivars was evaluated, from which 23 were considered resistant and two susceptible to leaf rust. Traits analyzed were the plagiotropic branch length and number of nodes, net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, water use efficiency, fluorescence and chlorophyll index, leaf area index, leaf rust incidence and yield. Catucaí Amarelo 20/15 cv 479, Araponga MG1 and Tupi IAC 1669-33 cultivars show highly responsive to framework pruning. These cultivars have high yield associated to high net photosynthetic rate, water use efficiency and low transpiration rate. Moreover, the last two cultivars show a low incidence of leaf rust. The Acauã cultivar has a good response to framework pruning, showing high yield associated to lower incidence of leaf rust. Catucaí Vermelho 785/15 cultivar is not responsive to framework pruning because show lower yield, high incidence of leaf rust, low vegetative growth and low water use efficiency.

(Editora UFLA, 2015-07) Andreazi, Elder; Sera, Gustavo Hiroshi; Faria, Ricardo Tadeu de; Sera, Tumoru; Shigueoka, Luciana Harumi; Carvalho, Filipe Gimenez; Carducci, Fernando César; Chamlet, Daniel
