Changes in composition, antioxidant content, and antioxidant capacity of coffee pulp during the ensiling process
(Sociedade Brasileira de Zootecnia, 2014-09) Rios, Teodulo Salinas; Torres, Teresa Sánchez; Cerrilla, María Esther Ortega; Hernández, Marcos Soto; Cruz, Antonio Díaz; Bautista, Jorge Hernández; Cuéllar, Cuauhtémoc Nava; Huerta, Humberto Vaquera
The objective of the present study was to determine the nutritive value, the presence of antioxidant compounds, and the antioxidant capacity of coffee pulp ensiled or non-ensiled. Dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), ash, acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and lignin, as well as the antioxidant compounds present in coffee pulp and their antioxidant capacity, were determined. A completely randomized design was used. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance. Ensiling of coffee pulp increased the CP content from 98.6 to 111.6 g kg −1 DM, NDF from 414.6 to 519.5 g kg −1 DM, ADF from 383.9 to 439.3 g kg −1 DM, and lignin from 122.9 to 133.6 g kg −1 DM. Caffeine decreased from 5.72 to 5.02 mg g −1 DM. Three antioxidant compounds were detected. Caffeic acid decreased due to ensiling (16.49 vs 14.69 mg g −1 DM). Gallic acid (2.88 vs 2.58 mg g −1 DM) and chlorogenic acid (62.12 vs 56.00 mg g −1 DM) did not differ, and there was similar antioxidant capacity of non-ensiled (215.66 μmol trolox g −1 DM) and ensiled coffee pulp (206.59 μmol trolox g −1 DM). Despite the decrease in the caffeic acid content due to the ensiling process, it is possible to use either ensiled or non-ensiled coffee pulp for animal feeding because of its high antioxidant capacity.

Effects of coffee husk as floor covering on the behavior of boars
(Sociedade Brasileira de Zootecnia, 2017-12) Teles, Mariele Cristina; Pereira, Bárbara Azevedo; Rabelo, Stênia Severo; Pontelo, Thais Preisser; Chaves, Bruna Resende; Ferreira, Rony Antonio; Gil, Joan Enric Rodríguez-; Zangeronimo, Márcio Gilberto
The objective was to evaluate the influence of coffee husks as floor covering on the aspects of animal welfare such as behavioral characteristics, body surface temperature, and salivary cortisol levels of stabled boars. Sixteen boars were housed in individual stalls; eight were maintained in a conventional system with a concrete floor and eight were maintained on a concrete floor lined with coffee husks. The experimental period was 60 days. All animals were filmed two days prior to the start of the experiment, on both the 7th and 60th days after exposure to coffee husks, and finally two days after the removal of the material. During this period, the number of times that the animals ate, drank, stood, sat, lay down, and dug was recorded. Furthermore, both body surface temperature and salivary cortisol levels were measured at the beginning and end of the experiment. The use of coffee husks did not influence body surface temperature. Salivary cortisol levels increased during the experimental period only in the animals maintained on coffee husks. In the morning, the coffee husks decreased the number of times that the animals sat and increased the number of times that they lay down. In the afternoon, the use of coffee husks decreased the number of times that the animals stood, sat, or dug and increased the number of times that the animals lay down. Although coffee husks do not change the behavior of the animals in an expressive way, they should not be used as floor covering for boars.

Semen quality and reproductive performance of boars kept in pens containing conventional coffee husk as a floor covering
(Sociedade Brasileira de Zootecnia, 2016-07) Teles, Mariele Cristina; Pereira, Bárbara Azevedo; Rocha, Luiz Gustavo Pessoa; Resende, Carla Oliveira; Rodrigues, Valéria Vânia; Pereira, Luciano José; Gil, Joan Enric Rodríguez-; Zangeronimo, Márcio Gilberto
The objective of this study was to evaluate the putative effects of the use of coffee husk as floor covering on boar semen quality. Sixteen boars were divided into two groups. The first group was held in a conventional system with a compact floor. The second group was kept on a compact floor covered with coffee pods. The experimental period was 60 days. Levels of caffeine and chlorogenic acid in the insemination doses (ID) before and after 96 h of storage at 15 °C and the reproductive performance (litter size and rate of return to estrus) of these doses after their utilization in a standard artificial insemination protocol were evaluated. The ID from the animals kept in pens containing the coffee pods contained 25.4±8.7 μg/mL of caffeine, whereas no significant amounts of chlorogenic acid were detected. Semen from boars housed with coffee husk showed a significant increase in malondialdehyde levels, which indicates a significant increase in cell membrane peroxidation, after 96 h of storage. There were no significant differences in the other evaluated semen quality parameters when analyzed among groups. Likewise, there was no significant influence of coffee hulls on either the rate of return to estrus or the litter size of inseminated females. The use of coffee husks as floor covering worsens the quality of fresh semen and that of insemination doses stored for 96 h but not the quality of semen immediately diluted; therefore, coffee husks may be used only on farms that use semen immediately processed after collection without affecting the reproductive parameters of breeding stock.

Sticky coffee hull silage on the feeding of growing and finishing pigs
(Sociedade Brasileira de Zootecnia, 2011-02) Carvalho, Paulo Levi de Oliveira; Moreira, Ivan; Furlan, Antonio Claudio; Paiano, Diovani; Piano, Liliane Maria; Sierra, Lina Maria Peñuela Sierra
Two experiments were carried out with the objective of evaluating the performance and carcass traits of growing and finishing pigs fed rations with sticky coffee hull silage. In experiment 1, the coffee hulls were ground through a 4-mm screen and ensiled with 30% water and enzymatic-bacterial inoculant and evaluated in digestibility trial with 15 crossbred pigs distributed in a completely randomised design. Overall, the ensiling process did not improve the digestibility of the sticky coffee hulls. In experiment 2, it was used 60 pigs (32.52 to 59.58 kg) in the growing phase and 55 pigs (61.70 to 90.27 kg) in the finishing phase, distributed in a completely randomised design with five diets (0, 4, 8, 12 and 16% of sticky coffee hull silage) and six replicates. In the growing and finishing phase, inclusion of levels of sticky coffee hull silage did not affect feed intake, weight gain, and plasma urea nitrogen. However, in the finishing phase, feed conversion improved as the levels of sticky coffee hull silage increased. Responses by backfat thickness and marbling were quadratic, whereas empty stomach weight increased linearly when sticky coffee hull silage was included in the diet. Sticky coffee hull silage has good nutritional value and if used in levels up to 16% of the diet, it does not impair performance of pigs in the growing and finishing phases and it results in leaner carcasses. However, the economic feasibility of its use depends on the price relationship of this by-product with the other feedstuffs.

Coffee hull in the diet of dairy heifers: nitrogen balance and microbial protein synthesis
(Sociedade Brasileira de Zootecnia, 2010-05) Souza, Alexandre Lima de; Garcia, Rasmo; Cabral, Luciano da Silva; Pereira, Mara Lúcia Albuquerque; Valadares, Rilene Ferreira Diniz
It was evaluated nitrogen compounds and microbial protein synthesis in heifers fed diets containing coffee hulls (0.0; 8.75; 17.25; and 26.25% of dry matter) replacing ground corn concentrate at the following levels of coffee hulls in the total diet dry matter: 0.0, 3.5, 7.0 or 10.5%. It was used 24 crossbreed heifers (7/8, 15/16 and 31/32 Holstein-Zebu), which were distributed in a random block design made up accordingly to the weight of the animals. Spot samples of urine were colleted aproximatelly four hours after morning feeding and were used to estimate microbial protein synthesis by using urine purine derivatives. It was not observed effect of coffee hull levels in the diet on total nitrogen intake (160 g/day) and nitrogen excretion in the urine (87.4 g/day). The inclusion of coffee hull in the diet linearly increased nitrogen excretion in feces, as well as nitrogen balance. There was linear reduction in urinary excretion of allantoin, in total purine derivative and absorbed purine, which reduced 0.715, 0.873, and 0.954 mmol/day to each coffee hull unity added to the concentrate, respectively. Coffee hull altered microbial protein synthesis, which reduced in 0.687 g/day to each coffee hull unity added to the concentrate. Reduction in microbial protein synthesis can reduce weight gain in heifers fed coffee hulls.
